This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Hubby's squash are getting big and blooming in the greenhouse - we are behind on the transplants. Lemon tree is full of blooms and smelling good. A few of the blooms have tiny buds of fruit starting. New leaves are forming.
I got some of my herbs transferred to pots. The others I'm hoping to transplant outdoors, but I may have to put them in pots too and wait. We have a couple of fig trees ordered supposed to be hardy to zone 4 as far as the root goes - we are in zone 5.
I like fig newtons, so might have to figure out a recipe. LOL

Can I get a decent Beefsteak or Cherokee crop from a plant in a 5 gal bucket?
Doesn’t have to be a GREAT crop. The wilt seems to be everywhere and I just want some home grown ‘maters.

I finally got mine planted last Saturday. It gets harder as I get older to prepare the soil. This was the best garden I have planted if I can get it all going. I did Corn, peas. pole beans, zuc , yellow squash, cucumbers,peppers . tomatoes,and okra ( a little early here but we will see)
Starting off great. I will be planting tomorrow. Don’t think our last frost date of May 19 will ever happen. Weather is so nice - this is the earliest we have ever planted. Garden tilled twice, raked even. Planting green onion sets, radishes, sweet pea pods, dill, cilantro and I picked up 6 broccoli plants today. They go fast around here. Plus today the orioles, hummingbirds, and indigo buntings all back today. Have been watching them all.

Yes you can get some. Although, I had better luck with the Sweet Million - the cherry tomatoes that hang like grapes - it was covered - good producer and the plant looked like a decorated Xmas tree.

Whoo Hoo I hear you with the age. I get less motivated and find it physically harder too. Still, once the gloomy weather quits and it warms up a bit I’ll have a little more motivation.
Well we anticipated a delay in spring and also an early fall, so we tried to order as short days to maturity as we could.
Yeah, everything I found says the 5 gal is “iffy” for indeterminate heirlooms. Guess I’ll get one 10 gal- for luck.
First year of full blooms for my plum trees. Warm, then frost, but they’re making fruit. Will be looking for plum jelly recipes later, I hope.

I had been having some problems with bosom end rot on squash and tomatoes. Did some research and found that this is probably calcium deficiency. Ordered a 30 lb bag of Gypsum pellets (calcium sulfate) that should add calcium without making the soil too alkaline like crushed calcium carbonate could do. Also adding some Epsom salts to soil (magnesium sulfate) to add some magnesium. I have tomatoes and squash indoors for at least another month due to late freeze statistics.

Forgot to add that the gypsum pellets and Epsom salts were ordered on-line from Wal Mart. The Epsom salts are the same as for bath soaks.
Hubby frequently tells me that it’s ok for freezing weather with respect to potatoes. Says we could leave them there all winter and they would regrow the next year.
I bought a dozen verieties of pecan trees 15 years ago from Starks Nursery in north Missouri.
So far, no nuts.
Is there a pecan to nut fertilizer I should be using ?
I mix Epsom salts, crushed egg shells, water, and banana peels in a blender, and use that. I have also used tums in a pinch.
Diana has said something about adding water to the milk jugs and using that.
When hubby was growing tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets and had that problem, I had him mix up Epsom salts and Bone meal to add to them, and it worked.

I think you just bought 0baba variety trees that will never have nuts!
Really, I don’t know. Calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, copper and manganese are important in the right traces and ph level is important for plant health. Nitrogen is important for growth rate. You can send soil samples to your agriculture extension office with an explanation of what you want to grow and they can tell you what to do. I have not done that and it is why I am stumbling around figuring it out on my own.
I tried that here in the Colorado Rockies. The ground can freeze to over three feet deep and the potatoes turn to mush. I put stakes where they were and dug them up one by one in the spring. Only did that once.
