Hubby's squash are getting big and blooming in the greenhouse - we are behind on the transplants. Lemon tree is full of blooms and smelling good. A few of the blooms have tiny buds of fruit starting. New leaves are forming.
I got some of my herbs transferred to pots. The others I'm hoping to transplant outdoors, but I may have to put them in pots too and wait. We have a couple of fig trees ordered supposed to be hardy to zone 4 as far as the root goes - we are in zone 5.
I like fig newtons, so might have to figure out a recipe. LOL
Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.
Yay! For gardening!
Can I get a decent Beefsteak or Cherokee crop from a plant in a 5 gal bucket?
Doesn’t have to be a GREAT crop. The wilt seems to be everywhere and I just want some home grown ‘maters.
Thanks...here bitt
I finally got mine planted last Saturday. It gets harder as I get older to prepare the soil. This was the best garden I have planted if I can get it all going. I did Corn, peas. pole beans, zuc , yellow squash, cucumbers, peppers . tomatoes, and okra ( a little early here but we will see)
Starting off great. I will be planting tomorrow. Don’t think our last frost date of May 19 will ever happen. Weather is so nice - this is the earliest we have ever planted. Garden tilled twice, raked even. Planting green onion sets, radishes, sweet pea pods, dill, cilantro and I picked up 6 broccoli plants today. They go fast around here. Plus today the orioles, hummingbirds, and indigo buntings all back today. Have been watching them all.
Pinging the list.
I had been having some problems with bosom end rot on squash and tomatoes. Did some research and found that this is probably calcium deficiency. Ordered a 30 lb bag of Gypsum pellets (calcium sulfate) that should add calcium without making the soil too alkaline like crushed calcium carbonate could do. Also adding some Epsom salts to soil (magnesium sulfate) to add some magnesium. I have tomatoes and squash indoors for at least another month due to late freeze statistics.
*Bump for Morning Coffee* :)
Lady Bender and I planted 3 rows of Yukon Gold potatoes and 2 rows of Carola (?) potatoes this week and the skunks started digging then up so we had to lay down row covers to hopefully put a stop to that. We still have to plant 2 rows of Desire. Our rows are 12 feet long
We’ve received almost an inch o9f rain in the past week, as well as (finally) some decent weather.
The bees arrived, and went into the hive Monday; after telling me shipping would be delayed a week, they arrived a week early. Fortunately, everything necessary was ready when I picked them up at the Post Office. They seem happy enough, but I’m not supposed to peek inside before Monday to check on the queen & any comb building.
ALL of the Fall planted garlic is now up; thought I’d lost most of it, since it got cold & snow covered before it could sprout, and was very slow emerging this Spring. Between that, and the 75 or 80 I planted last week...
First daffodils & apricot blossoms are opening, and the violets are blooming. We cut our first asparagus spears today.
I’ve begun shredding pine cones for mulch; there’s a lot of those things, and the wife is adding to the stack just as fast as she can. :-(
Finally! It’s SPRING!!!!!
Still working on getting everything together so I can start planting. My little greenhouse is assembled except for the vent window. I had bought a solar-powered opener that said it would fit this model. Turns out it doesn’t, but I keep trying to adapt it. Without it, the window blows off in the wind. I might get the drill out and put a real hinge on that window, I don’t trust the way it hangs.
My last seed order has arrived. Among other things, I ordered 2 different C. mixta squash. I had one, and I like the way it grew and stored, but the flavor was just kind of “meh”. I’m hoping to find a better one. There aren’t many choices for C. mixta squash, some catalogs don’t carry them at all. Baker Creek is the only one I’ve seen with more than one variety. If I don’t find one I like, I might take the 3 I have and cross them to try and breed a better one.
The new land purchase is going slowly. It seems the attorney handling the title search isn’t used to dealing with vacant rural lots. He’s having trouble working around the fact that the land doesn’t have an address attached. Oh well. It is still getting done. I’m debating applying for an agricultural loan after closing on the land, to help with building costs. I reeeally want to move out there before fall!
Slightly closer to home, I found a bunch of grinding stones on sale at the hardware store. I’m planning to get all my cast iron pans out and grind the insides smooth. That’s going to be a messy chore!
Temperatures continue to flip-flop and it is raining again. Roses started to bloom and I’m having the best crop of lettuce ever!
We got 1/2” of badly-needed rain here in Central Missouri this week. Hoping for more, but the prospects appear slim.
I’ve been plugging away at the kitchen garden. Seeded pole beans and cukes a couple days ago. Went to the nursery and bought pepper plants yesterday morning and stuck them in the ground.
I need to place a seed order. I’m out of the Russian Bunching cucumber that Mrs. Augie prefers for her fermented pickle recipe, and I’m probably a quarter pound short on pumpkin seeds.
Still having fits with Nanner. Got everything reassembled, filled the hydraulics tank, started it up, and found another hydraulic line that’s got a hole rubbed in it. This one is a hard line and I’ll be shocked if it’s still available from Agco so I’ll probably have to make a new one the hard way.
Sun came out and weather turned warmer. Spent some time with the gardening pots. Planted a geranium which is ok for use in part sun conditions, a patio sized tomato, Lil Napelion (spelling). Watered well. Took photos on my new SmartPhone but don’t know how to get the pictures off the phone and then post them. Because I tire easily, will plant basil tomorrow. Then my vegetable planter is done. Also planted caladium bulbs and can hardly wait for them to sprout!
