“Should the catkins mature before or after the female flower is receptive, pollination does not occur.”

Probably your problem.

My hazelnuts are the same way. It’s reccommended to have a different variety for timing.
I planted them in different areas with different sun so they’re not all at the same stage at the same time. It’s worked.

You caught me by surprise tonight as the time has been flying by.The corn seed I soaked earlier in the week is sprouting in our make believe green house already…

Lady Bender and I planted 3 rows of Yukon Gold potatoes and 2 rows of Carola (?) potatoes this week and the skunks started digging then up so we had to lay down row covers to hopefully put a stop to that. We still have to plant 2 rows of Desire. Our rows are 12 feet long…

A couple of photos for Eric in the Ozarks. I must say that I am a tad bit jealous…

One of the great joys of my life after family etc. is my garden. It is wonderful therapy for me.

I just like to have stuff to eat that I know doesn’t have a ton of pesticides etc. And it tastes better too.

I like to walk and listen to music for therapy.

We’ve received almost an inch o9f rain in the past week, as well as (finally) some decent weather.

The bees arrived, and went into the hive Monday; after telling me shipping would be delayed a week, they arrived a week early. Fortunately, everything necessary was ready when I picked them up at the Post Office. They seem happy enough, but I’m not supposed to peek inside before Monday to check on the queen & any comb building.

ALL of the Fall planted garlic is now up; thought I’d lost most of it, since it got cold & snow covered before it could sprout, and was very slow emerging this Spring. Between that, and the 75 or 80 I planted last week...

First daffodils & apricot blossoms are opening, and the violets are blooming. We cut our first asparagus spears today.

I’ve begun shredding pine cones for mulch; there’s a lot of those things, and the wife is adding to the stack just as fast as she can. :-(

I just received a zink additive for pecans from Starks.
We have pecans in the wild part of our Ozarks property.
They have similar leaves...

We can plant taters here in Texas in winter and the plants make it ok thru freezes but our ground doesn’t freeze like that. I think it would depend more on the ground freeze depth than air temps.

Out in the southwest the orange blossoms on a six year old tree were spectacular. As usual the winds came along and knocked most off so the orange crop will be small. Woe.

Still working on getting everything together so I can start planting. My little greenhouse is assembled except for the vent window. I had bought a solar-powered opener that said it would fit this model. Turns out it doesn’t, but I keep trying to adapt it. Without it, the window blows off in the wind. I might get the drill out and put a real hinge on that window, I don’t trust the way it hangs.

My last seed order has arrived. Among other things, I ordered 2 different C. mixta squash. I had one, and I like the way it grew and stored, but the flavor was just kind of “meh”. I’m hoping to find a better one. There aren’t many choices for C. mixta squash, some catalogs don’t carry them at all. Baker Creek is the only one I’ve seen with more than one variety. If I don’t find one I like, I might take the 3 I have and cross them to try and breed a better one.

The new land purchase is going slowly. It seems the attorney handling the title search isn’t used to dealing with vacant rural lots. He’s having trouble working around the fact that the land doesn’t have an address attached. Oh well. It is still getting done. I’m debating applying for an agricultural loan after closing on the land, to help with building costs. I reeeally want to move out there before fall!

Slightly closer to home, I found a bunch of grinding stones on sale at the hardware store. I’m planning to get all my cast iron pans out and grind the insides smooth. That’s going to be a messy chore!

“Can I get a decent Beefsteak or Cherokee crop from a plant in a 5 gal bucket?”

I hope so.
I’m doing the same thing this year.
No one but me and a big garden would be too much.
I plan to put 4 tomato plants in containers and plant some peppers in a small area that used to be a flower bed.

Good luck to us!

The first windy storm we had, our vent window got blown off. I was at the computer and heard the water coming in from the rain storm. It was at night, so hubby put it back on sort of and tied it down and used duct tape on it, while I held the flashlight.

He hasn’t quite decided what he’s going to do to fix it better. Meantime, I have to prop open the door for ventilation, but on sunny days it still gets pretty hot in there even when cool outside.

My fall garlic went in late, and I was concerned about it, but it seems to be doing well. A few of the tips are brown due I think to freezing, but not bad at all.

Hubby has been shredding leaves and branches in the chipper to put in the mulch/compost heaps too. We are needing to order a load of top soil, but the guy that usually brings it, is out. So Hubby is looking for another source.

Temperatures continue to flip-flop and it is raining again. Roses started to bloom and I’m having the best crop of lettuce ever!

Glad to hear the bee shipment arrived safely. Every year I put out potted lobellia plants because my local bees love them. I saw that Wal-Mart had some nice potted lobellia plants for $12.88 but I'll have to go back for them. No room in my back seat after they loaded the peach tree. 😊😅😆
