"It appears she was taken to the ground, lost consciousness, and the dogs then mauled her to death,...The area where they found the victim’s body was covered in blood, Agnew said, adding that it took at least eight hours for investigators to collect over 60 pieces of evidence. "It was an absolutely grisly mauling," Sheriff Agnew said. "In my 40 years of law enforcement I've never seen anything quite like it.

Big, clumsy dopes.

The *only* one I ever saw that was impressive was the one they used on some weird “boar hunting” TV show a couple years back.

That dog could hunt and bring those hogs down, something fierce.

Never have a pet where you have to carry a sidearm at all times..

I agree, chihuahuas don't make good guard dogs......You never see them in junk yards for good reason.

“If I’m not mistaken, German Shepherd are #2 on the list as far as dogs who attack and kill people.”

Back in the stone age when hardly anyone had black and white TV I had an encounter with a German shepherd. As about a 10 year old lad I was walking home with a bag (paper in those days)of groceries. The prize inside was a package of hot dogs. A pack of loose dogs led by the alpha Shepherd started walking with me. Out of nowhere rin tin tin took a chunk out of my butt. I yelled, dropped the bag and took off. Looking back the bag was in shreds and wienies going down the hatch. Apparently thats all they wanted as they just went away. Have been extremely wary of German Shepherds ever since.

The neighbor had one named Bozo and we kids were all warned that he was vicious, and to stay away from him.

Indeed, he did act crazy and mean.

So, naturally, one day when no one was around, I went to visit Bozo.

His collar was embedded into his neck so badly, skin and hair had grown over all but the buckle and maybe an inch or two, to each side of it.

I pitched a fit when the neighbor got home and she had her brother come up and cut the collar out of his flesh with a hunting knife...yes, wide awake.

After he healed up [miraculously] he just about turned himself inside out, every time he saw me.

I took him treats and toys since they didn’t do anything but throw food near the barrel that was his “house” [more or less] every day.

Poor dog lived a long, sad life, except for my visits.

Better picture in our Knoxville paper and Twitter feed this morning. They don’t look as big here as they did in the other pictures. I don’t see 120lbs of dog but it’s hard to tell.

Everybody continues to just assume they’re pits when one is clearly a Great Dane and the other is a brindled mixed breed that doesn’t appear to have much or possibly any pit or other bully breed in him. Photos on the Knoxville WATE site show far more tattoos on the young woman also, not just the Virgin Mary tattoo previously discussed.

I’m 60 and less physical than before so I use mental intimidation with my Rotts

Plus I’m six five 240 so I tower over them

You have to maintain that over them

It helps isnthey are submissive....some are not

Nice bloodhound...rocky top

Thanks Wardaddy! I have never been afraid of the more aggressive dogs but I know that at my size if I lost control of one it could end badly. When we had our Rotty/Catahoula’s, my husband was able to help train and handle them. He had a bad wreck several years ago and due to brain damage his balance is too bad to even handle the dogs I have now. He is also almost 80 years old. He’s only five years younger than my mom. A big dog could easily break him with little effort. :-) If I was going to have another big dog it would be a Rotty. I know my limits now though. My big bloodhound is 10 now and so are my mountain curs so the bloodhound is on his last rodeo. He’s been a good dog but they don’t live long. I’ll have my Feists from now on. They aren’t frou-frou dogs and are good ratters and varmint dogs without being too much for me to handle.

A lot of silly responses on this thread so Im just responding to you.

"Thats not a pit! Thats a ..."

Those other things being named are all molossers and "bulls" are a branch of molosser. All of the molossers, even the entlebucher, require consistent and present masters who have made it clear that there is no question as to the alpha role during their training. None of the molossers, nor any of the working spitz for that matter, are suitable as part time pets and certainly not for beginner dog owners.

My crystal ball is on the fritz so I dont know what happened here. I do know that in any situation where an inexperienced dog owner with a light touch sporadically interacts with the molosser they think they own, somebody is bound to find out differently in an unpleasant way.

I had a pair of such doggies charge me once- like your middle picture, but more white in their coat- fortunately the owner was hot on their trail and they were very obedient when he ordered them to halt. But it did rattle my nerves and make my heart run pretty fast.

That Manakin Road area in Goochland... I recognize both names, it’s where my Huguenot ancestors had a settlement circa 1700. Abandoned Indian village, it was the western frontier at the time.

Former NC Governor Mike Easley a distant cousin? Oh well, everybody’s got their black sheep in the family, lol. Don’t feel too bad if so, I’m kin to Jimmuh.

If you killed all the Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes in New Mexico you’d probably be taking out 60% of all the dogs.

Go to any local shelter and all they have are Pit Bull mixes and Chihuahua mixes.

We have two rescue dogs. Diesel is an intimidating looking dog, but the vet says he has no pit bull. Daisy is a Louisiana Catahoola Leopard Dog/Great Dane mix. She is very timid and makes a great shop dog. Loves everyone but the FedEx guy.

I dunno. I stop following the Easley line in 1772 when Sarah Easley marries Robert Loxley Stubblefield, so I’m not sure which modern Easleys are cousins.

But probably so, I read somewhere that most people whose lines go back Colonial America are related. The farther back the higher that possibility. The population of British North America was two and a half million in 1776. It was only 1,500 in the early years of Jamestown.

Carter is one of the oldest and most prominent Jamestown families- maybe you and Jimmuh hail back to that line. I have a William Parker and I think a William Powell as Jamestown ancestors- “ancient planters”- the records get a bit murky that early and it’s hard to tell what is going on.

Wardaddy has an interesting Jamestown family tree. Maybe he’ll share it.

My most colorful Jamestown line is Sizemore. Reputedly descended from Chief Powhatan’s half brother Opechancanough via the rape of Mary Sizemore in the Second Powhatan War of I believe 1622. That’s one that DNA testing would likely never prove so it’ll remain a colorful legend believed by many. Other Jamestown lines of mine would be Southern and Tucker.

The William Powell that I may or may not be descended from survived the 1622 massacre organized by your ancestor Opechancanough.... Powell then organized a revenge party and managed to get himself killed in that effort.

All of this when the Mayflower glory hounds had barely gotten their feet dry on their Plymouth Rock beer run.
