freerepublic | July 7, 2017 | greeneyes

Posted on 07/07/2017 7:40:57 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings Gardeners. We had our hottest day so far this year at 95 degrees. I got that garlic pulled today and watered a few things. Hubby has to buy put on a new splitter for the hose from the swimming pool before I can use the easy way - had to haul the water in buckets, so only watered the bare minimum.

Fourth of July fireworks are still going off all over the neighborhood and town here. We don't have much in the way of ordinances on anything here, and many people around here are just live and let live - so no worries.

Had to make an unexpected trip to the Joplin area for a funeral. My sister was undergoing treatment for lung cancer, but passed away - surprising doctors, her kids, and me. It was a long trip, and we didn't get back until dark yesterday.

I think I am in sugar shock and carb overload from all the pizza, doughnuts, hotdogs etc. we ate on the way down and back as well as while there. Also seem to have picked up a sinus infection.

Hate to post and run, but I'm wiped out. Going to hit the hay and I'll check back with every one tomorrow. Apologies to all.

Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.

I found this video yesterday regarding using Aspirin in your garden. It is pretty amazing. Apparently a dilute aspirin solution mills mold and allows seedlings to grow stronger and faster.

I planted double to triple density this year due to chipmunk attacks. Seems to be working pretty well. Not sure if I will need to thin or not, but have good number of surviving plants (so far).

Not sure why...but I think the near constant rain has destroyed my garden here in Georgia...

Oh those flowers are so pretty! I had my only - er - success growing flowers from seed.

But I thought the daisy’s were the shorter ones. Now I have a big clump of four foot tall daisy’s which are expanding a bit each year. I can’t even find my bellflowers anymore!

I suppose I could have worse problems.

Sorry for your loss.

Harvested 3 squash - 2 or 3 were kinda squishy and got tossed. A few more on the way. Plus another small squash planting coming on strong (fairly new but 9+ strong plants).

I’m gonna try the aspirin thing on a couple of fresh pots tomorrow with tender shoots.

FINALLY, getting something OUT of the gardens for all the work I put IN.

Buttercrunch lettuce, pickles, cucumbers, Little Finger eggplant, string beans (slow this year), mint. Tomatoes still green. Finally, after 3 years trying, some squash growing. Radishes in window boxes are almost ready to harvest.

Question - after growing season, which goes first - fertilizer or herbicide?

Ahhhh thanks for the garlic picture. A beautiful sight. Do you have to dig up your dahlias for the winter where you are at?? We do in Michigan so I’ve only done it a couple of years.

Great weather again this week in Central Missouri. We got another inch of rainfall so I haven't had to do any watering at all. A really good thing as work work has been a killer. 15.5hrs in the office yesterday dealing with a production problem. No fun but it's all fixed now.

All of the rain has kept me from working in the pond for the past couple weeks. Really need it to dry up so I can get back on that.

I need to spend some time in the kitchen garden pulling weeds and tieing tomato plants to the fence. I've got a lot of big green ones but nothing ready to pick yet. Might dig another row of potatoes. Also need to get my kentucky wonder beans in the ground. It's getting late for that but they'll do ok if I get it done this weekend.

The cuttings I took from the busted peach tree are doing well in the cloner. No wilt at all so far. I also took some cuttings off of the big weeping willow tree that I planted out by the pond when we moved out here.
