To reward myself for doing ALL of the mowing (a 3-hour job!) to surprise Mr. Wonderful when he comes back from CA tomorrow, I made up a pretty bouquet for the kitchen.
Purple Cornflower, Calendula, Scarlet Runner Bean blooms, Kale, Oregano, Sage & Asparagus fronds. My sister gave me the 'Plant Manager' sign when I worked for Jung's and the Bluebird S&P Shakers were my Grandma's.
Now you’re just flirtin’ with me! ;)
I’m dedicating a part of one bed (of 11) to garlic this fall. I cannot WAIT! The other half is going to be tulips and daffs for Spring bouquets all through the house. We already have tons of Lilacs, but I need Peonies in the worst way, too! ‘Festiva Maxima’ and ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ will top the list!
Man, this ‘starting over’ after having an ESTABLISHED garden of 25 years is tough, but Mr. Wonderful is worth it, and he buys me whatever I want, so there’s that! :)
P.S. What are your favorite varieties in the ‘Hardneck’ line? I love the scapes, so I usually grow the hardneck v. softneck and they’re hardier here in Wisconsin.
I like Germain Porcelain/White and Italian Purple, so far but am always open to new hardneck varieties.
There are several things that happen to you as you turn 84 and one of them is your memory goes to hell and I can’t remember the others...
LOL! You Da Man, Tubey!
Thanks!
Bump, to remember to try that.
Everything must eat something that was once alive.

One of many bitter cucumber thoughts.
I like the California White that I’ve been growing. It has a great garlic flavor and since it’s become acclimated to the soil conditions in my garden it makes fantastic yields, but I’m looking to add a variety that’s got more fire to it.
What would you recommend for a good hot garlic?
I’ve been struggling to keep my garden alive here in North Fort Worth. Moved some of my potted pepper plants, about 2 dozen, to the other side of the yard in the raised beds just vacated by my corn. Lugging the potted tomato plants up onto the porch in the afternoon when the sun gets too hot and trying to strike the right balance with watering. My eggplants went all wilty the other day and I thought it was from over watering. No, actually after I dumped another gallon of water they sprung back to life.
I’ve already got a freezer full of peppers, corn, eggplant and tomato sauce. I keep finding new ways to use eggplant and peppers in recipes that can be frozen in single servings. I feel like a squirrel storing up acorns for the winter.
I’m not a connoisseur of garlic I just like to grow it during the months nothing else is growing in my garden. I’ll ask Lady Bender when she gets home from Church...
picking thornless red raspberries a small handful each day
a new pepper we're trying - tangerine something or other. Mild pepper supposed to turn orange so we haven't tried them yet. Just got the one plant as we had a bit of room yet but lots of peppers.
getting ready to pick our first of 4 broccoli heads. For just the 2 of us, 4 plants is enough we get loads of secondary heads.
Every morning I pick a few things, some pea pods, bush pickles, jalapeno gigantes and mammoth, a few cherry tomatoes and lettuce the head and young romaine. A few late radishes. The larger bush pickle I'll slice thin and mix with some pickled Vidalia onions in the fridge. They make a nice salad.
our little farmette. 10 acres mostly heavy woods. The house has southern exposure. Recently cleaned out circular flower garden in the front, long raised bed and up near the house 6 large pots with more tomatoes and peppers.
Our barn, used to have dairy goats. Concrete floor so now it is a hobby/storage building.
Have a great week gardening FRiends!
Very sorry about your loss. I hope the sinusitis clears up soon. Get some rest.
Excellent photos and crop. Love the shed...
Shed??? That’s a 2 story barn. Hayloft holds 122 bales. Or are you teasing because you have a bigger one?
It’s nice looking whatever it is...
I guess I have some pride left in me about my barn. Hasty reaction. As someone raised on the south side of Chicago the idea of having a barn was a dream. Loving hubby let me pick size, shape, design, color. I even did the wood cut outs of the goats and our sign. 2 years ago it needed repainting and I figured I better get to it as last spring I had my second knee replacement scheduled. I took me 3 weeks but I use good barn paint. I love to look at it out the kitchen window when I am doing the dishes. I ran the water and electric, using an old electric chain saw to dig a trench for the wire and pipe. The water comes from the house and I rigged a cute little handwashing sink out of a blue spatterware pot. Poured concrete floor has a 6” drain so we could hose out the goat pen inside. It also has a cute trap door in the back so we could shovel the old bedding ot the back. I love my barn!
That’s good info to know. I’ve made notes and put into my garden folder/planner. Thanks.
Keeping my fingers crossed.
Too much water deprives plants of oxygen, IIRC. I know I used to kill all my houseplants with too much water, before I learned to give them some neglect. LOL
Thanks.
