Massachusetts Governor Favors Removing Memorial to Deceased POW's at Fort Warren

Gov. Charlie Baker indicated he would support ridding Massachusetts...of its only such (Confederate) memorial. A modest stone marker was placed on Georges Island in Boston Harbor by the local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1963. It commemorates the Confederate soldiers imprisoned in Fort Warren on the island during the Civil War (and lists the names of those who died as POWs).

As states across the country grapple with the question of whether to remove their Confederate monuments, Gov. Charlie Baker indicated he would support ridding Massachusetts—a bastion of the antislavery movement—of its only such memorial. A modest stone marker was placed on Georges Island in Boston Harbor by the local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1963. It commemorates the Confederate soldiers imprisoned in Fort Warren on the island during the Civil War, referred to on the marker as “the War Between the States.” Asked by WGBH’s Adam Reilly if the governor thinks it should remain, Baker’s office suggested he does not. “Gov. Baker believes we should refrain from the display of symbols, especially in our public parks, that do not support liberty and equality for the people of Massachusetts,” spokesperson Lizzy Guyton said in a statement. “Since this monument is located on a National Historic Landmark, the governor supports [the state Department of Conservation and Recreation] working with the Massachusetts Historical Commission to explore relocation options.” Actually removing or relocating the thing is complicated. The DCR, which said it has yet to receive a complaint over the marker, owns and operates Georges Island. But the federal government may have final say, as Fort Warren is a designated National Historic Landmark, overseen by the National Park Services. (And we all know how well-versed in American history this administration is.)

The things that happened to the POW’s at Fort Warren are so bad the horror movies won’t touch them.

Why shouldn’t these pigs throw the remains out of their graves while they’re at it?

The ultimate goal is the destruction of all the icons of this country. They know it will take a long time. They don’t care. Team names. Columbus. Confederate flag. Accusing Thomas Jefferson of raping a slave, Sally Hemmings. The American flag. Little by little. They can wait.

..... Little by little. They can wait...

The Democrats and other liberals plan is to destroy the United States a little at a time so we won't notice the big plan...incrementally.

Just one atrocity at a time to rewrite or destroy history.

It takes a special kind of evil and stupidity to desecrate memorials to the long-dead. Equality? Hell, we are all equal in death!

To the best of my knowledge, the worst thing about Fort Warren was the boredom. It was a prison mainly for officers and high ranking public officials, who were as well-treated as any POWs of the war. The prison commandant's son went to war with a letter from some of the prisoners asking that he be well-treated in the event of capture.

Last time I visited George's Island, there was a display of photographs of confederate POWs. They looked healthy enough.

Alexander Stephens spent a little while imprisoned there after the Civil War.

Boy, it's a good thing a Republican is doing this! Can you imagine the outrage from conservatives if Baker was a Democrat? The Dem Governor would completely ban all Confederate-related memorials, products, and monuments!

See how it's important to hold your nose and vote Republican?

The average confederate soldier was generally a better shot than the average union soldier out to a certain range...A skill that was generally wasted when they were put in ranks and fired by volley. Beyond that range, the union definitely had the edge in terms of marksmanship, because the Union actively sought out professional marksmen and competition shooters and recruited them to sharpshooter units and armed them accordingly. The first and second US sharpshooters were pretty much unmatched by any unit the south could muster.

He’s going to get crushed next election. Why vote for a half-ass liberal when you can get a full-ass democrat.
