This is the terrifying moment a plane almost landed sideways as ferocious winds hit the UK yesterday (Thurs).

Some started vomiting as the pilot struggled to control the 777.

"Passengers told how they watched the drama unfold on the TV screens on the plane." Reminds me of the scene in Airplane!

That is an excellent pilot.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop smoking.

Standard approach with a cross wind, crabbing in. It does look worse than it is.

My point is that he is not struggling at all.

Perfect text book approach for the situation.

You beat me to it. I made many approaches that looked like that, but in a Beach Bonanza.

Lots of videos like this on YT and LiveLeak. Nothing new or all that extraordinary, really.

Seems like this happens every time I fly into Chicago’s Midway International except the pilot always gets the plane on course just before it lands. Scary stuff.

That seems to be the overwhelming thought on the link’s comments section. I was a little surprised the TV remained on for viewers, however. Maybe the pilot did so to ease passengers concerns?

Yeah, he had that landing nailed if he had just crabbed for the touchdown. Maybe he was just practicing? Looked like a max climb out too?

Didn’t look like he made much of an attempt to straighten it out as he approached the touchdown? Two ways to land on cross wind approaches. Low wing or crab. If crabbing the plane has to be straightened out just before touchdown.

I used to fly into an airport (passenger on a jet) east of LA numerous times. The Santa Anna winds were scary. Come in at an angle like this all bumpy and getting tossed around, watching the wings jump all around, crazy. Then what seemed like 10 feet off the ground he would straighten it out, everything would be smooth for 10 seconds, and then touch down.

I watched it several times and I agree. Crabbed into the wind and decided to abort when it was apparent that he couldn’t rudder is staight enough to get it aligned with the runway.

I say well done!

Been driving airplanes since 1968. Watched the video. This is way overblown. The crosswind component was just too high for the aircraft. He had to go to a runway that was more aligned with the high wind. I am sure it was upsetting particularly because in wind like that it can get quite bumpy close to the ground and the wind gradient in the last few hundred feet can cause a greatly increased rate of sink.

Sorry but I don’t think he had to “ditch”(extreme) but go back around
