Honestly... and I don’t say this as some armchair quarterback... but for high crosswind landings that was a fairly standard approach. I have had commercial pilots make such landings with me aboard... The part that scares me when I was practicing crosswind landings in a 172... is straightening the aircraft at touchdown. It was always tense.
