Images collected from the French National Archives of soldiers and civilians on or near the Western Front. One must presume these were taken during a lull in the fighting due to the long exposure times required by colour film.

If you haven't yet read 1913: In Search of the World Before the Great War by Charles Emmerson, I highly recommend it. While a bit lefist in his take on some things, it's a fascinating (and for me, very enlightening) catalog of what was going on at that time.

This is a super find. Ought to be reposted in 11 days.

I wonder how many of these men survived the war-——France suffered enormous casualties fighting off the invading squareheads.

BTW, the sgt. with the table full of munitions might be a post-war ordnance disposal guy. They are still dealing with unexploded stuff from the World Wars today. IIRC, a French or Belgian farmer found a buried British tank from WW 1 on his place a few years ago.

The two pictures with sailors may be crew from the battleship gun on the rail cars.
