As I recall, there is one of these planes at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo (airplane museum). It is parked (suspended, actually) right nearby a World War Uno “red baron” open seater (you know, like Charlie Brown’s dog flies).
When we visited, the SR71 was just reachable above your head (you walk underneath it).
A real thrill seeing that plane (and the rest of the aircraft there).

From the book: "We did Nebraska in 7.2 minutes today. I think that's the best way to do Nebraska." SLED PILOT

Thank you. That was fun!

About 20 years ago, before Robins AFB completed their indoor museum, they had a bunch of planes in the 'backyard', as it were. Just sitting outside, and one could walk right up and touch them. No fence, no guards.

They had an SR-71 and a U-2, among others.

My wife’s father was one of the original group of SR-71 pilots. I never met him (he died before we met) but I sure would have liked to talk with him about that machine...

The only (known) aircraft capable of sustained flight above Mach 3 — it didn’t fly *as* high as the U2, but could still get up pretty high; wasn’t stealthy in its last decade or so, but was for all practical purposes invisible for years. “What’s that?” “What?” “On the scr- oh, there’s nothing there, never mind.” Already mothballed — reportedly because the corrugated exotic-alloy skin had holes cut in it for expansion during flight, such that it leaked fuel during those minutes it sat on the runway before takeoff, and some base commanders were freaks about that — it was returned to service during the Gulf War because intel needs far exceeded the capability of the recon satellites then in orbit.

I was stationed at kaduna for 5 years.... The “habu” was a regular site. I miss that roar, and those afterburners at night...

There is one at the outdoor museum off Fl 123 next to Eglin AFB.

It’s free and has a B52, F15 F16 F18 and much more.

I was near Kadena (sp?) in ‘71-72 and saw the Habu once in awhile. One day one of them took off and pointed it’s nose straight up and whoosh! Out of site straight up in nothin’ flat. Never saw anything like that before or since. AMAZING

U-2 can get to about 70,000 ft, SR-71 would sustain 85,000 ft.
