My little girl is 5. Perfect time to start Girl Scouts except ... well I suppose y'all will fill me in on that. Thoughts?
I have no experience with the youth programs in the YMCA, however, a quick search with dogpile.com (I refuse to use Google or Bing) yielded this ...

The Y-Adventure Princesses is for Fathers and Daughters ages 5-12. We offer fathers the chance to bond with their daughters on many levels to build a loving and trusting relationship that will last a lifetime. The Y-Adventure Princess program is a unique learning experience for both father and daughter.
Sounds like a good program to investigate. But I am seeing more and more of an international flavor to all youth organizations, i.e., a de-emphasis of American nationalism and patriotism. I have a distant cousin involved with 4-H. As someone earlier on this thread mentioned, that would be worth investigating.
Stay away from the Y(W)MCA, they are no more representing family values than the modern Girl Scouts
What's the bible passage about not recognizing/acknowledging Christ in public? Sad, and scary times ...
Way to miss the point. I didn’t ask for confirmation that it’s ok, I asked for alternatives and a better understanding of why it ISN’T ok.
“I asked for alternatives and a better understanding of why it ISNT ok.”
You have been here since 2000 according to your profile. If you don’t know (and considering all the recent discussion over scouting as a whole), well, I don’t know how you can be so uninformed as to why it’s not ok already. And in great detail.
If you find that offensive, well, whatever. But it is beyond belief that you are blind to what they are about. If you truly are, well, my post, caustic or not pointed out why.
I don’t care what you or anyone thinks about me personally. All I care about is stopping another child from getting fed to liberalism by someone on the right, knowingly or otherwise. As a right wing parent, I would hope you cared more than I did considering the child is your own.
Thanks. That seems the new information and fits with history I could get too.
I asked family and they said it was Indian based until recent years. Now they still use those terms to designate teams within the “troops”. Guess the open American Indian emphasis was “offensive to some”. PC you know! They still have “breaking their arrow” ceremonies when they outgrow the program and leave. Still have father daughter dinner dances and camp-outs as well as some monthly programs.
The CCC chapter at the university I work at changed their name to Agape a few years ago.
I’m a-ok with that change.

As a former CubScout Den Leader for my son; to be fair I decided to lead a Daisy/Brownie Troop for my daughter. DO NOT put your daughter into Girl Scouting. Even back in the 1990’s they were teaching the wrong things. Liberal progressive etc! Also they are very controlling.
Here’s an example, they have a rule that a “first aid trained person” must go on all field trips. Not a bad rule until you learn the details: we had a Emergency Room Nurse Practioner who was, according to Girl Scouts, NOT qualified because she didn’t take the GSA training. But a mom who was an accountant who took a three hour class was. Really? Really?
My daughter who was exposed to Cub Scouts (she came to the den meetings with me) quit after two years (she didn’t like the program at all). My son is an Eagle Scout.
Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting ARE NOT THE SAME THINGS AT ALL! /imho
No quarrel with the use of that word. I'm 58. I remember C3 from the early 1970s and all those signs proclaiming "Josh Is Coming." Even read his book, Evidence That Demands a Verdict. Someone always seems to have their finger in the wind checking for marketing currents.
Yes, I am aware that Muslims are espcially sensitive over the word "crusade." I had my run-ins with Muslims on campus during the 1979 Iranian Embassy Hostage Crisis. Now that I am an old curmudgeon, my sensitivity towards Muslims is exhausted. As the saying goes ... "All I need to know about Islam, I learned on 9-11."
You obviously know a lot more about the subject than I do. I really do not mean any offense. Like another Freeper has mentioned, I would just rather give them a finacial donation, assuming that 100% of the money will go to the girl’s troop.
My issue is getting insulted for asking for further insights which I may not have on an issue which I have prior not had reason to scrutinize beyond general awareness. I’m asking because I DO know there are such problems, and would like of know if there are nuances/details I’m missing.
I’m not sure how “I understand there are problems, please inform me further and provide alternatives” gets construed as “I’m blindly throwing my kid to the wolves, please insult me.”
Don’t bother responding. You’re not helping.
Some people refuse to be helped.
I’m asking for help, not insults. You’re insulting, not helping.
If you want to hand your child over to liberal hell, why ask? If you know what the GS is, how or why would you even ask the question in the first place?
Do you have any idea how many scouting threads on FR are filled with people trying to justify putting or keeping their kids into BSA or GS? Do you have any idea how insane that is on it’s face?
If you know what they do, there is no need to ask unless you are looking for a way to have your cake and eat it too. You can call me insulting, others can call me a nut. But the fact remains that if you were not potentially intending to put your kids into GS KNOWING what they are (and being a freeper since 2000 it would be pretty hard to deny), you would not have asked about them to begin with.
Thank you, and good night.
None taken. This is a very common topic of interest with a lot of misinformation floating about. Just trying to lay out the facts.
... Like another Freeper has mentioned, I would just rather give them a finacial donation, assuming that 100% of the money will go to the girls troop.
I certainly understand that POV. The same attitude is prevalent among many supporters of BSA units when the annual Trails End Popcorn sale rolls around.
I’m an Eagle Scout. Decades ago when in Scouts, BSA & GS were laudable organizations, and sending kids thereto was a given. Now it’s not, so I want alternatives.
I just find the BSA popcorn really expensive.
You have a lot of company. Around 2012, a trend began emerging from local councils where they switched from Trails End to other popcorn vendors. The reasons given were that Trails End products were (1) overpriced, (2) did not offer enough commission, and (3) had decreased in quality.
>> I just find the BSA popcorn really expensive.
That would have been OK, assuming it was priced to give the scouts a generous cut.
My problem with it was that it was lousy popcorn.
Now, the question is moot; I will no longer support BSA in any way, shape, or form.
Do you know anything about Girls On The Run (through the YMCA/YWCA) as an alternative to the Girl Scouts?
