“This article is repleat with references to Ms. Bruninga-Matteau.
Ms. Bruninga-Matteau this and Ms. Bruninga-Matteau that.
But no reference to MR. Bruninga-Matteau???
(I think we found the problem here.)”
Very good point.
All of these leeches can go to hell.
If you want to get an advanced degree in Middle English, I applaud your scholarship, but it’s not my job to support you! Get a job in academia. If you can’t find one, learn to do something that will fill your belly.
if you get a degree in a field where the only opportunities are in teaching (perpetuating a dead subject), if you intend to pursue this as a career the field must be either expanding, or the incumbents must be quitting. either way, even if you DID land that teaching job, next years graduates will be looking to unseat you.
when we stopped going to college for a career, and began that lofty ‘to improve ourselves’ motivation, things started going south.
"Educated" in the 90's by socialist indoctinaires
duuhhhh
I hope your son in the future prosecutes Klownie the Kenyan at the White Hut. No bigger criminal than that one..
Part-time college instructors only make a pittance with no benefits—the key being no benefits—something brought about by tight state budgets and now to be exacerbated by Obamacare.
Several years ago I was offered a part-time position to teach a college course. The pay was $26 per class meeting, twice weekly. As the campus was on the other side of town, the gas expense would take a chunk of that. Besides class preparation, time spent grading and writing student reviews would make the wage less attractive than a part-time job at Wendy’s. Already employed full-time, I declined the “honor”, not only because of the poor pay but I had burned out on teaching these entry level courses in my youth.
I had a computer science professor tell me one time that if I studied hard and got good grades, then went out and got a job and some experience, I could be like him making over 75K per year.
Before I could catch myself, I blurted out “But I can’t afford that much of a pay cut”. The professor went purple with indignation.

Mideival Times is hiring waitresses at 8 bucks an hour. Be nice, you will get good tips.
You have touched on a general problem with a sizable percentage of college grads who have "failure to launch" syndrome. They have been raised and educated to feel they are special and will only work if they find the perfect job. Too many others have been shown that they can make more on various public assistance programs than they can by working so government dependency is fostered and continues to grow.
If you’re working part time, get a second job. With a degree you don’t HAVE to be a teacher.. There’s plenty of options. I studied music in college, and wish I could do that full time, but it doesn’t pay the bills, so I sit at a desk, don’t like my job.. But it’s pretty secure, pays the bills, and I have pretty good benefits.
I also work part time at a bar to pay for my toys. It’s not a great living, but I’ll never have to take a penny of government assistance.
Here’s a handy little guide for all the prospective college students out there.
I WANT TO LIVE = I NEED FOOD = I NEED MONEY = I NEED A JOB = I NEED JOB SKILLS = I NEED TRAINING IN JOB SKILLS
Nothing wrong with an education, but you need to be alive to receive an education.
She should have gone into administration at the college. That seems to be where the money is.
I kept reading and re-reading the article, looking for the underemployed engineers who are on the dole.
Couldn’t find any.
Funny thing, that.
Here’s the irony: there are hundreds of thousands of jobs that need technical skills and a willingness to get dirty that are going unfilled — and many of those jobs start at $18 to $20/hour. With bennies.
These soft-as-butter liberal arts people need to get out into the real world and open their eyes. Liberal arts degrees are USELESS for supporting a family unless you hold a tenured professorship at some big-name university. Then you can pull down some comfy bucks. But to teach at a community college or something similar? There’s dozens of similarly useless people in the line for the job behind you, so the wages will conform to the laws of supply and demand. There’s an infinite supply of scribblers with liberal arts degrees out there... and a dawning realization by the American economy that these degrees are without merit or economic potential.
Better to get a two-year degree in welding and hit the oilfields.
Thats all you need to know right there.
she could supplement her income with that degree by offering online courses to high school students--homeschooled high school students... she could charge $600 a head, never even have to leave her home while doing it... my son takes classes like this online... my homeschooling mom friend began offering online writing courses and always has students with parents willing to pay... $550-$600 is standard...
Good Gracious where did you find this Chronicle which is probably primed by the regime and designed to pump more white guilt dough into “higher education” ?
The author a Stacey Patton cites 3 examples of struggling professors who are on the dole.
I just deal with the 1st and ask;
What is causing her (beside her selection of studies which is of a very limited demand) to be in this situation ? $900.00 income per month $750 for housing ? $40 weekly for gas travelling to work because the area she works at is too expensive ? Which leaves $110.or $27.50 weekly for expences ? Why is she paying so much for housing (which is probably subsidized) ? What’s causing that ? Could it be some policy of the regime ? Gas for certain is regime policy and never touched by the last campaign which reached into every demographic pocket book .
Point being that so called Presidential campaign run by the GOPES never attacked any of those policies. That’s why we lost.
Exactly.
I never finished my ‘Bidness Degree’ and have managed to stay gainfully employed (and well paid) for the past 20 years since leaving the Army.
Funny how employers are willing to pay for the remaining few of us that have common sense, a stellar work ethic and an understanding of, ‘if I’m successful and make $$$ for YOU, you’ll share it with ME!’
My sister, OTOH, is one of these over-educated FOOLS who works low-paying jobs in academe; she’s basically always been a glorified secretary. Hard to believe we have the same two parents! ;)
She has that sense of ‘entitlement’ and is SO much smarter than me, but what do I know? *SMIRK*
