Flying around an 8-mile track at 500 miles per hour is something most of us probably can't comprehend.
But for many pilots, it's a lot like Christmas, in September.
"The biggest part of that is not so much getting and opening up the presents, it's seeing your family," Will Whiteside said. "These guys and gals up here have become, over the past ten years for me, my family."
"If you miss it, you feel a void in your life," Marilyn Dash said. "When I started racing about ten years ago, I couldn't imagine doing anything else with my September except coming here and we call ourselves our September family."

Flashback to 2010: Marilyn Dash Ruby Red Racing # 4 Pitts reno 2010 GoPro
Please ping me to aviation and aerospace articles. Thank you.
If you want added to or removed from this ping list, please contact EveningStar or Paleo Conservative.
Would love to go to Reno someday. Got to fly a T-28 years ago. Add me to your ping list.
You’re added. :)
Safe races bump!
At least its not all left turns
I was stationed in Fallon for several years and we were lucky enough to get in for free. My kid and I would sit on the back of a squadron jet and watch the show. Those are very good memories for me.
Gotta do something for a living. Might as well be something that you like doing.
It sure as hell beats racing bicycles.
Could you please add me to the ping list? Been many years since I last flew PIC, but I still hangar-fly ... and drool over airplane porn :-) Thanks!
Done. :)
PING!!
Glad to see Marilyn Dash still making news.
Attended my first air race at Stead in 1964. Since then, it has really grown in popularity. At the time, I only had a 50 mile drive from California to get there. Our nephew has a home very close (red rock) and three years ago we watched the races from his back yard. There is something very special about the pilots and crews of these performers.
I was once again unable to get to the Races this year. :(
She is by far one of the finest and formidable IPWs I have ever known
It was great week. Finally had a Gold Unlimited final after a 3 year break . Strega wins gold again. Bear pulled out with a 1/2 lap to go giving 2nd place to Deptember Fury an third goes to Dreadnaught after Precious Metal had to mayday due to a gear door coming open.
Weather was perfect all week. Attendance was down a bit it seemed but it was still well attended. The memorial on Sunday had me in tears. Didn’t get to see Marilyn and Ruby. Sorry Dasher!!
Next year is 50th anniversary so it should be special. I’m still in Reno so will post pics later.
It doesn’t surprise me in the least that pilots will return to the races.
I work with members of the family that was decimated at the races last year. A couple of weeks ago, the brother with whom I work and his father, both of whom lost legs last year, returned to the air show and attended the memorial. My boss (and his wife, both of whom also lost legs in the crash) were not able to attend, but he said that they would be back.
