10,000 square miles of floating volcanic pumice found in Pacific

Came from an underwater volcano.
The New Zealand Navy announced today that they have found a patch of floating volcanic pumice from an underwater volcano floating about 600 miles off the shore of New Zealand.

“The rock looked to be sitting two foot (half a meter) above the surface of the waves and lit up a brilliant while colour in the spotlight. It looked exactly like the edge of an ice shelf,” said Lieutenant Tim Oscar aboard the ship the HMNZS Canterbury.

Scientists aboard the ship said the white pumice – which covers 10,000 square miles ( 26,000 sq km) – probably came from an underwater volcano called Monowai, which has been active recently, but that it was unrelated to other increased volcanic activity in New Zealand this week.

I wonder what is heating our seas? And I wonder how many fish will dies as a result of this eruption?

What is interesting to me about this is that it was found first by surface vessels, not satellites.

What the hell did we pay for if these machines don't notice a white patch 100 miles across on a dark ocean?

Would be nice, but I think that it would probably just sink :)

Precious metals wouldn’t be ejected by a volcano in a usable form anyway, since those ores are formed by processes in the crust, and the magma comes from deeper down than that.

Then their perverse problem will be back in their face for once!!!

Not good at math or the science, but, how many mega tons of this stuff be at 10,000 sq miles of this stuff ?

No reason to get excited. Judging by the one photo I've seen, the density of the material is extremely low. Gather it all together and it's more like 100 square miles; that's a square 10 miles to the side.

But that report would not be nearly as exciting for the idiot MSM reporters.

Guam is only 209 sq. miles. It must have snapped off from this thing.

Of course there is commercial value. What do you think people use to rub dead skin off their heals and bunions. I read where after Mt. Pelee blew its top in 1902, the ask that fell on ships decks was collected and used to sand down the wooden decks and considered a superior abrasive.

Time to bring in Lisa P.Jackson of the EPA to put down some basic rules. :)
