Remington 770 thoughts (Vanity)
None ^ | Taxcontol

So I'm back in the market for a hunting rifle for deer / antelope / elk. Would love to be able to afford a $1,000+ rig but that is just not in the works at this time. I've been looking at the Remmington 770 combo in either 30-06 or in .308.

Yes. If you squirt some windex down the bore before you clean it, no problems.

See how easy it is to turn anything into a Mosin thread?

Not completely accurate. Most factory triggers are set on the high end for liability as much as they are for safety. While +6 pounds is adequate for greater than minute of angle accuracy and ranges within 150 yards the trigger pull is not very crisp in all rifles. Remington has an excellent trigger at nearly all settings as well as Savage while Ruger and Winchester can be a little rough other than pre 70 models. Weatherby are very nice. Adjusting down to 3 or 4 pounds is safe. Any safety minded hunter knows when to have a round chambered, when to engage the safety, and when to have their finger on the trigger only when ready to shoot with a target in sight and safe down range. For my varmint rifles shooting offhand or with shooting stix in the field 3 pounds is needed when shooting out past +500 yards. On my Ruger #1 in 45-70 but loaded with pressures and muzzle nergy exceeding and or matching factory .458 Winmag rounds in 400 gr bullets the triger is @ 4 pounds. For the inexperienced, inebriated, or mentally deficient hunter I would agree, never touch the trigger adjustment. For the experienced hunter who is safe and shooting non-dangerous game adjust away to your comfort level. For hunting dangerous game which is mostly done by experienced hunters they already know that you don't want or need a hair trigger. That is more of a balanced approach than to say never adjust the trigger I believe. Just saying....

Breaker Morant, of course. "We got them and shot them under Rule 303!" Edward Woodward in one of the best film performances ever.

I have a Savage 99C .243 which has a trigger pull of 8+ pounds. Love the rifle... hate the trigger! I have taken it to a couple of topnotch gunsmiths and they don’t want to touch it.

Newer Savage bolt rifles come with an adjustable trigger I believe factory set @ 7 lbs. I agree 8 pounds is a little heavy. My Rem 700 SF Varmint in .22-250 is set @ 4 lbs. and was factory set near @ 5 lbs. My Ruger M77 made in 1982 is rough and near @7 pounds, but I wont mess with the trigger. It is crisp though and shoots minute of angle or better with a cheaper Bushnell elite 3X9 mounted on it. My M1 Garand has a heavy pull but will shoot one inch groups at 100 yards offhand. Most of my Moisan Nagants are monsters and fun to shoot but 3” groups on a good day.

Or if a person is feeling really militant, buy a M1917 Enfield in 30.06. A real man, beast and small imported car stopper.
I have a SMLE 303 that has a really smooth bolt and stopping power as well.

Lighten up, Alice. Yer all verklempt.

The rest of the story - Granted, it is corporate media - but then, who to believe, the manufacturer of 5 million of these guns (and the millions of sportsmen who swear by it), or wacko-liberal tv editorials?

http://www.remington700.tv/

Not ONCE has the problem been repeated - not a SINGLE TIME, on a rifle that was properly cleaned, and whose config was proper.

... buy a M1917 Enfield in 30.06.

I have one that was sporterized in the late '50s or early '60s. The barrel was turned to reduce the contour and reamed to .300 H&H. I had it refurbished a couple years ago. Then I added a Timney trigger. The walnut stock that was made for the rifle was a little sad but I was able to make some repairs and coat it in truck bed liner.

I have managed less than 1 1/2" groups with 200 gr Noslar Partition hand loads several times.

A lot of people use the action from those to do what you did. The construction of those things were so strong that it could take the pressure.
Mine is GI Issue Eddystone.

OK, Remington says their rifles are good. Boy I'm glad we got that cleared up. They even show a rifle going off with no finger on the trigger, ahh, but that's somebody screwing with something. And the thousands of letters they get are just people wanting money, and most of the lawsuits are settled in their favor. At least we got the objective no spin opinion from Remington. It is kinda bad that the counter point was CNBC so that's one in your favor, but CNBC isn't the only complainant here.Look I can't spend two days on one subject, I was just suggesting that he look at Google and see for himself. Gun brands are like cars. Some are Chevy people and some are Ford people. The problem with a gun is that one time in 10,000 it goes off may kill someone you love. There are anecdotal stories in every gun shop I've ever been in. To act like that's the only side to look at is just foolish. I can't believe you used a Remington piece to support your position. I was waiting for them to admit they built a piece of crap, but alas, it wasn't to be. I think the announcers paycheck would come up short if she said the company was lying. I'll be looking for GM to say the Volt is a piece of crap nobody wants. The facts are, the company has paid lawsuits, the designer said there was a flaw and drew up another design that was rejected by Remington, and the discharge was filmed and it was a policeman that did it. Can't they be prosecuted if they intentionally faked it? I would buy a Ruger or Browning. Just sayin.

Full disclosure, I own a million shares of Strum Ruger stock, am the CFO of said company, and have a film that shows Ruger's never misfire and always hits the target. We've never been sued and don't have a special on CNBC. That should count for something.

Nice to see you here ... I want one of the new Ruger 1911 pistols, with the great night sights and three mags extra, but alas I cannot afford such a fine weapon so I own a Hi Point .45 ACP and a Norinco 1911. Both of my pistols mentioned hit the target when I fire them and go bang so long as there's ammo in the mag. But I sure would like one of those fancy new Stainless Ruger 1911s to try out and make comparisons. ;^)

Are the primers corrosive?

Not on the new, commercial stuff coming out of Russia.

The corrosive stuff is the mil-surp ammo.

LOL. You know, the sound of a Mosin bolt closing is the only sound known to cause fear in zombies.

(Now, it's a Mosin AND zombie thread.)

;-)
