“50-stone is 700 pounds American”

Check your math; the last I knew a “stone” is equivalent to 20 pounds. That makes the beast 1000 pounds.

Well, after reading your comment, I got to wondering why you would come up with a bizarre number for a stoneweight, so I checked it out.

You came up with that figure because that's the OFFICIAL weight the Brits use (unless they're weighing meat; then it's only 8 pounds)! So, is the moose 700 or only 400 pounds??
FWIW: In the vernacular, a stoneweight is anything from 4 to 26 pounds. In Europe, where I became acquainted with the term, it is commonly understood to be 20 pounds.

They need to put up signs: DO NOT CUDDLE THE MOOSE

That would not be necessary if parents took the reponsibility of telling their kids that. But 83% of parents fail to do so.

I always wanted a house with a fireplace and a moose head over the mantel

Maybe the moose wanted a house with a stuffed girl over the mantel.

A police spokeswoman warned people "not to agitate the moose".

Don't they mean "A pølice spøkeswøman warned peøple "not to agitate the møøse"?"

Lazy reporters.

That pretty much sums up why we made it to the moon and all of Europe didn't even try.

I didn't realize moose could climb trees

The girl had pretty good vision too, being able to see all the way to Anchorage, Alaska.

Why izit the UK finds all the good stories?

Because the only actual investigative journalist in America is Glenn Beck, and he's very, very busy.

Oh, and because they still teach children English in the UK. Well, in between the 5 daily prayers anyway.

My dictionary says one stone equals 14 pounds. I just checked online and several sites had that ratio, but one had 1 stone at very close to 17 pounds.

Admittedly the dictionary I consulted was published about 50 years ago, so maybe things have changed. Someone may have misunderstood the injunction "grow some stones!" and decided to make stones weigh more.
