The dem campaign tried to portray Brown as a right wing Neanderthal. As far as I can tell from a distance, he in reality is a centrist mildly leaning to the left.
For that particular state in 2010 this may be their idea of a conservative, but it's difficult to imagine anybody like an actual across the board conservative winning this election. Even against Coakley.
The only big political name from outside the state he brought in to campaign was bogeyman Rudy Giuliani. He seems tight with Mitt Romney and Romney policies. In his victory speech he prominently and unreservedly praised Ted Kennedy. He's spoken in favor of alternative green energy technologies and has said the battle over gay marriage in the state is settled. And at some point you can depend the Obama administration will find issues his state would wish and demand he support. That's a lot of failed litmus tests for both the purists and the paulists.
Will people accept the reality that a centrist is better then a Kennedy Machine puppet? Or can we look forward yet again to Truth Files, barrages of RINO and traitor accusations, and snide and petty posts about his nude modeling photos.
Once the health bill is settled it will be interesting to see how long before the sugar buzz ends and the daggers come out.
Incredible, just like Election2008 - but different GOP target.
It’s interesting his shout outs went to Romney and McCain, nothing to the Hannitys, Becks, etc that gave him the platform to gain nationwide cred. I didn’t see a mention of the Constitution in the victory speech. He was certainly dead-on national security though.
Oh stop. The man won. Now, let’s just focus on November, k?
It will probably happen the first time he breaks ranks with the GOP or discusses the possiblity of doing so. And in all likelihood, he will deserve the criticism he gets.
A true conservative could never win in Massachusetts, so a moderate is indeed the most we could possibly hope for. Still, a moderate in Massachusetts is akin to a fire-breathing arch-conservative in, say, Texas, comparatively speaking.
Right now we have his word that he will vote against HCR. If nothing else, we win at Gettysburg. The fight goes on.
I guess its started already. He didn’t thank Rush, Sean, Mark Levin, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, etc. Scott is right on some issues and even Mark says you have to find the common ground. We aren’t going to agree 100% with everything any politician says or does, but, it seems on this forum, one has to tow the line or be kicked to the curb.
Let’s give him time. Gosh, he hasn’t even been seated yet. I like his stance on national defense, lower taxes, less government, etc. He’s more like JFK in those areas. Heck, even JFK wouldn’t fit in with today’s DEMRAT party.
He is no, and never has been, a Sarah Palin. We know he isn’t conservative. But he is our best hope for stopping the headlong hurdle over the cliff into the chasm of communism. You take the victories that you can get and you work from there.
He is Republican #41. He is also a message to Washington and he's a great message but as a Senator, I think many here will find him a bit of a disappointment. He will never be a darling of the tea party movement.
I think we’ll find that Massachusetts has elected a senator who will match up nicely with Joe Lieberman’s views on many issues. He’ll be strong on defense, but is a moderately pro-choice big-government republican. Conservatives probably will grumble frequently in the future about his “betrayals”, but in reality, he will be much better than Coakley would have been. Remember, New England is the land of Lowell Weicker, Lincoln Chaffee, Susan Collins, Olympia Snow, Jumpin’ Jim Jeffords, and -— yes -— Mitt Romney, another pol whose conservative cred has often been suspect.
Now just think about it. Are you, or anyone else here, actually suggesting that Brown should have used the occasion of his victory speech to thank media pundits????
Get real, people. Good Lord......
“Turn on” him? ...
We can, should, and must hold his feet to the fire. He’s a “centrist”, and let’s have no illusions that he will always act as a conservative.
OTOH, he is replacing the communist Kennedy ... and defeated the communist Coakley.
That, my FRiends, was a kick in the crotch to the ‘Rats.
Kicking the ‘Rats in the crotch is always good.
I don’t disagree. It’s the oldest debate in America, how pure do my associates have to be. I’ve just been reading about John Winthrop (”the forgotten founding father”) and Roger Williams, Massachusetts Bay Colony c 1635 and Winthrop vs. Ann Hutchinson. Although somehow, as history is written, Williams and Hutchinson are the champions of religious toleration, it was Winthrop who did all he could to hold the center.
No but thanking people “all across the country who have helped with their money and efforts,” would have been a nice touuch. So also just a mention of the Constitution would have been the bow to the Tea Party. Overall, I’d give the speech an “A.” With a little embellishment, an “A+.”
As near as I can tell, the last time there were Republicans in Massachusetts more conservative than Brown was in 1920, with Governor Calvin Coolidge and Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Sr. So Brown is the best man in 90 years — no small achievement.
“Oh stop. The man won. Now, lets just focus on November, k?”
C’mon what would an election be without divisiveness within the GOP? I mean if you don’t disillusion voters they might show up at the polls and you might win an election.
Hannity had a bunch of Mass voters on last night.
My impression was that many Mass voters had always voted Dem because they were Dems and had never really considered the issues.
Mass is still an extremely liberal state and is hardly the Mass of 200 years ago as has been suggested.
He is a crusial vote AGAINST a bill that would have taken our country over the cliff. He won because he was against Obama’s Dathcare and Coakley was not. Period!
I would be more concerned with what other Pubbie Senator the Dems will concentrate on to try to buy off. The fight is just beginning.
