Lion trapped, relocated from north Boulder neighborhood

A young mountain lion was trapped and relocated by the Colorado Division of Wildlife after eating a house cat Monday ... north Boulder.

“He was just too close,” Churchill said. “We wanted to give him a spanking and move him out of town.”

Wildlife officials previously tagged the same cougar in February when the kitten was stuck in a tree, Churchill said.

He is part of the five-year Front Range Mountain Lion Study, which aims to track mountain lions between Lyons and Evergreen to better understand cougar movement trends and develop a way to mitigate aggressive behavior near human establishments, Churchill said. In 2007 and 2008, 18 cougars were captured and are now being tracked.

Still, there's no guarantee the lion won’t return, Churchill said.

“Some just like to keep coming back,” she said.

Long ago, we had a friend whose girlfriend took in a stray. She named it Bushes because she found it under one. She gave it to him because of his woodsy yard. About a month later, it got carried off by a raptor. He never told her, and they broke up, but for years, she would call to ask about Bushes, and he would always tell her, “Fine, fine. She had another litter,” or “She’s doing great.” etc.

Jennifer should start reading the news about cougars "which did not pose a public safety risk."

Sad for the three year old to die needlessly.

( onlookers cornered the cat near the river. But in the nearly three hours it took for cougar hounds to arrive, the animal slipped away )

No one armed ?

Yes, fortunately the child survived and it’s a miracle.

Don’t know much about Canada gun laws but believe they’re pretty strict. You’ld think in that amount of time someone could have gone home and got a firearm.

The Three Legal Classes of Firearms in Canada:

Non-Restricted Shotgun Non-restricted firearms are ordinary hunting and sporting rifles, shotguns and airguns with an overall length of 660mm or greater. Many airguns fall into this class because they are capable of achieving a muzzle velocity of 500 feet per second. If it is a centrefire semi-automatic firearm, the barrel length must be at least 470mm to be non-restricted. These firearms must be stored, transported and displayed according to Federal regulations and you need a firearms licence to possess them. Provincial and municipal rules may further regulate these firearms (e.g., Ontario hunting regulations require that firearms being transported be encased at night). Certain firearms, although they meet the above criteria, have been classified as “restricted” or “prohibited” by order-in-council.

Restricted Handgun - Para-Ordnance Restricted firearms include many handguns and other firearms which do not meet the above specifications. Some firearms are classified as “restricted” by Federal order-in-council. A transport permit is required to transport a restricted firearm from the location where the firearm is registered. Anyone with the appropriate firearms licence and a valid purpose can acquire this type of firearm.

Prohibited Firearm - AK47Prohibited firearms include all fully automatic firearms, converted automatics and a variety of other scary looking firearms which have been classified as “prohibited” by order-in-council. Most types of prohibited firearms are “grandfathered” to their current legal owners (i.e., owners are allowed to keep them), but cannot be transfered to non-grandfathered individuals. Firearms converted from full-automatic to semi-automatic, and many handguns (barrel lengths less than or equal to 105mm, .25 or .32 calibre) fall into the prohibited class. If you do not already own prohibited long guns, there is no legal means to acquire firearms of this type.

Does Canada have CCW permits ?

What can parents do to protect their kids from these attacks?

No mountain lions or bears sighted so far this year. Only deer, elk and coyotes. Very slow compared to last year here at 8500 ft in the Colorado Rockies.

The mountain lions and bears went to Boulder for the easy meals.

That is not a pretty picture! Even a bear or mountain lion would probably not want to eat a smelly hippie no matter how easy to catch! I would expect swarms of dung beetles heading to Boulder!

I'm taking a survey. I'm trying to find out how many people who refer to "smelly hippies" have actually smelled a hippie.

I don't think so. The second paragraph I posted said..."Some firearms are classified as “restricted” by Federal order-in-council. A transport permit is required to transport a restricted firearm from the location where the firearm is registered.", but I'm pinging a few others who may know more.

What can parents do to protect their kids from these attacks?

Carry a unrestricted firearm, I guess.

Further.....The transport permit allows you to carry a registered hand gun, in your trunk, in a container. I understand one must call their local police to let them know you are transporting the hand gun to the shooting range, and back.
