Celebrating history of Northumbria
The Journal (Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, County Durham) ^ | Wednesday, February 25, 2009 | Neil Mckay

A new exhibition revealing the history of the palace of the ancient kings of Northumbria has opened in Durham.

The exhibition, entitled Yeavering: rediscovering the landscape of the Northumbrian Kings, is now open at the Old Fulling Mill Museum of Archaeology on the Banks in Durham City.

Known only from the 7th Century writings of the Venerable Bede, Ad Gefrin, the palace of the Anglo-Saxon kings in Northumbria, was little more than a legend until archaeologist Brian Hope-Taylor began work at the site of Yeavering in North Northumberland in the 1950s.

It was in 1949 that aerial photography revealed the site's potential, and Hope-Taylor's digs uncovered evidence for large rectangular timber halls, a massive wooden grandstand seating more than 300 people, two cemeteries and an early Christian church. Recent work has uncovered evidence of more buildings.

The exhibition traces the history of the site, what we can learn from the original excavations and how today's archaeologists are expanding our knowledge of this unique piece of our national history.

The exhibition runs until March 29.

The Old Fulling Mill is open 11.30am to 3.30pm Friday to Monday. For information tel: (0191) 334-1823.

Neat. Didn’t think there was really much known about the dark ages apart from the writings of a few contemporary scribblers.

I was stationed in England for 2 years. For a history buff, it was heaven. (The climate sucks though)

Really? You have thirty seconds to answer this question correctly: What color was Oswald’s favorite pair of socks?

The Northumbrians (Geordies) are often stereotyped in England as dummies and the butt of jokes, sorta like the Texas AGGIES.

And I guarantee you can NOT understand their regional dialect as it isn’t based on standard English.

Don't know as if I'd call it a dark age in Northumbria, what with Bede and the accomplishments of the monasteries. Now, after the Vikings arrived, things turned dark in a hurry.

LOL!

I guess, like Obi Wan said, it all depends on one's point of view. If you're the one taking all the loot and women, life is good!

I made the mistake of asking a Geordie for directions on the London subway once.

He answered with unintelligible gibberish and I must’ve looked stunned stupid because my fellow passenegrs had a good laugh at my expense.
