Who's pulled the plug on the Roman Baths?

They are one of Britain's foremost ancient monuments and attract as many people as Stone Henge.

But visitors who choose to drop in to Bath's Roman Baths today will find them empty.

The Great Bath at the city's Roman Baths is being drained of natural thermae spa water for its quarterly clean-up...

Modern-day items recovered in previous cleans include umbrellas, traffic cones and even a moped.

Once the Roman sluice-gates were re-opened, the Great Bath refilled from the spring at the rate of 13 litres per second.

The plug was pulled on the Great Bath at 11am yesterday morning and the baths have yet to be completely refilled.

The archeological site, which attracts more than 1million visitors a year, is now purely displayed as an ancient monument.

But until the late 1970s, brave swimmers bathed in the murky waters once a year as part of the Bath festival...

But the council banned all bathing after a dangerous bug was detected in the water.

I had a chance to visit Bath a few years ago. A fascinating place to see.

We were in Bath last year. If you go, you must see “Bizarre Bath” a hysterical historical tour of the city.

I was there in 2006 as part of a 20 days bus tour. It was raining the day we went, but I thoroughly enjoyed my visit.

If I remember correctly, the bug in the baths at Bath is typhus.

We’ve had many cases of typhus in our area.

They were talking about reopening the Baths to bathers when I was there in 1997. They were getting ready to celebrate some anniversary. I guess the re-opening never happened.

The creepiest place I went in Bath on that trip was one of the city’s so-called “finest” resturants. It was located in a Roman sewer. The walls were painted chartreuse and it was named “Toxique”. It specialized in fish.

Otherwise my stay in Bath was delightful.
