In a rare intervention by the federal courts into college athletics, Federal District Court Judge Butch Leftwich has order a temporary block of the College Football Playoff rankings as issued earlier today by the Committee, citing unfairness and political bias.
In her ruling, Judge Leftwich stated "In this current political era, it is unconscionable and de facto unconstitutional to have a college football playoff committee choose 4 teams from deep red states. This court has determined that a more fair distribution would include for example, Syracuse or USC." The judge did not include Ohio State in her list, as a possible representative team from a swing state.
The judge further elaborated that an obvious injustice was done, in that Syracuse, during the regular season, beat one of the 4 teams selected. She also cited Donald Trump's rhetoric during the campaign as possible reasons to choose USC, a major conference champion from a sanctuary state.
In order to expedite a replacement ranking, Senator Chuck Schumer and Congressman Adam Schiff have called for a special counsel committee to choose the 4 teams. In this process, each of the top 10 teams could claim to be worthy of a playoff spot. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the process, due to his home state being Alabama. Sessions declined to elaborate, simply stating that he "has no reason to dispute these teams' claims."
The ruling is expected to be challenged by an Appeals Court. It is unclear whether the decision would be appealed in time for the 4-team playoff round currently scheduled for New Year's Eve.
Forgot to attach: In related news, attorney Gloria Allred has already called a press conference with a female university official whose team was passed over for selection. Allred cited the official’s yearbook, which included a note stating in part, “to a more worthy college I could not imagine being chosen. But you know what? we’re gonna whoop you anyway:) We win almost every damn year. We’re actually getting tired of winning. And yes, Trump stole that from me! Love ya, Nicky, DA”. At this time the authorship and authenticity of that yearbook entry cannot be determined.
You forgot the BLM division that the owners just donated $$$millions to.
Lol...it’s funny because it could be true.
It is great to see OSU not make it to the CFP.
You just barely got in in time. :)
I love the part about Sessions’ recusal.
I am in Ohio and have a daughter who graduated from OSU and I still don’t think they deserved a play off spot. It was a fun year to watch but by no means a championship year. Cotton Bowl is fine with me!
would Hawaiian judge be to on the nose?
I actually thought of that, then no, too over the top!
The same way Ohio State made it over Penn State last year. When Herbstreet (sp) made sure of that last year, I predicted they just painted themselves into a corner and all it took was one season for it to blow up.
The good news is this will be the movement behind a real playoff of conference champions. Imagine this, how loud will the howling be if the final game is Alabama and Georgia? The perfect nightmare for the Big10 and especially ESPN.
