Wednesday evening, 43-year-old Rosemary Billquist decided to take her two Labrador Retrievers, Sugar and Stella, on a walk in a field behind her western New York home. Little did she know that she would not be returning home.

Shortly later, Rosemary's husband, Jamie, heard his dogs barking. When he went outside to see what the commotion was about, he was greeted by EMTs who were pulling into his driveway. One of the EMTs was also a family friend.

"Jamie, we've got a gunshot wound," the friend said as he rushed into the field.

The victim ended up being Rosemary.

How the Shooting Occurred The Billquist's neighbor, 34-year-old Thomas B. Jadlowski, thought he had seen a deer in the field. He grabbed his single shot handgun and shot Billquist from 200 yards away, The Buffalo News reported.

Once Jadlowski found Rosemary, he applied pressure to his wound as he called 911.

EMTs took Rosemary to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she was pronounced dead.

"They tried saving her," Jamie Billquist said. "It was just too bad. ... It's horrific. It will be with me the rest of my life."

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, Jadlowski has been fully cooperative with the investigation. So far no charges are being brought forth.

Hunting Violations Jadlowski called 911 at 5:24 p.m., 40 minutes after sunset, to report the incident. New York state's hunting laws prohibit an individual from hunting deer after sunset, sheriff's officials told The Buffalo News.

Because of the violation, the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, Chautauqua County District Attorney's Office and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation are all working together to determine if charges will be filled, and if so, what those charges will be.

"...Hunter accidentally kills woman walking two dogs..."

Dang, such a truly unfortunate story.
This poor woman thought she was going out for a pleasant walk.
So completely and totally avoidable by following basic rules.

Something is very wrong. A full investigation needs to happen. First thing is to reproduce the same shot at the same time from the same places (without actually taking the shot of course) to see what the hunter could see in that light from that distance in that location.

“Once Jadlowski found Rosemary, he applied pressure to his wound as he called 911.”

What about HER wound?

And the somewhat non-chalant manner they make her husband sound is strange.

At 5:30 pm it is night. At this time of year, even at 4:30 pm it is dim twilight. That this guy would be shooting at something at night is inexcusable. There is no way to identify anything at 200 yards at that time.

He didn’t properly identify his target Pity I️ don’t walk woods in hunting season Not excusing him ...he broke a cardinal rule in hunting He might get a charge of involuntary manslaughter

But this guy saw her and aimed at her. He is either a total ass or he wanted to kill her.

With a single shot handgun at 200 yards???
How many hundred rounds did that take? How old is the reporter? Seven?

No. Hunting. But it has been used for competitions of a sort. Like bench rest shooting

Outdoors/Rural/wildlife/hunting/hiking/backpacking/National Parks/animals list please FR mail me to be on or off . And ping me is you see articles of interest.

A sad ping.

I'd like to note Vaquero's important reminder that orange (pink where allowed) for non hunters is important so that they stand out in the fore and background, not just so some fool doesn't think they're a deer. Even my dogs wear orange

You usually try to find a rest. 200 yds would not be a problem with a limb or rock to throw a coat over to get a good 200 yd shot with a scoped rifle caliber pistol.

Isn't it a little ... odd ... that he's hunting deer with a single-shot hand gun?....And that he would try to shoot one after dark? And at 200 yards?

Hunting with a handgun, no, and most handguns designed for hunting are single shot.

200 yards, that's beyond my capabilities, and I'd suspect beyond the capabilities of most shooters and their hardward.

After dark, that's illegal. And I suspect will come back to haunt him when charges are filed. It would be unlikely he could identify his target at 200 yards after hours, in most states 15-30 minutes after sunset.

That’s not a difficult shot with a rifle caliber pistol and scope.

What the Hell did he shoot her at 200 yards with, a desert eagle?? Not likely. Most single shot pistols used for hunting have barrels in rifle calibers, and as long as 14". I've a 30/30 barrel for my Thompson Contender, I wouldn't dream of a 200 yard shot, but it would have the energy downrange.

My brother and I will both hunt deer with our Thompson Center Contenders when it strikes our fancy. They are single shot, break action pistols and you can purchase a large variety of calibers as the barrel/chamber detaches easily and can be replaced with another in a matter of a minute or two.

We both use the 30-30 caliber and have the 12" barrels. I would not chance a shot at 200 yards with mine but it seems the idiot who did this had no concept of firearms safety or responsible hunting.

I know that if I soot at a human, or deer, sized target I will hit it but it may not hit exactly where I aim due to the 12" barrel. This was so stupid and irresponsible I don't have the bad words to describe it. That boy needs to be in jail.

First thing Dad taught me and my brother as boys was to know your target.

My first year of deer hunting my Dad gifted me a WWII German Mauser (cost him $15 from Sears) and along with that a set of Bushnell binoculars. He said that those binoculars should be wedded to my hand and that before I was to shoulder my rifle I was to scan the area, verify the motion/noise in question was really a deer, and then make sure I could not see anything behind that deer. I have never wavered from those instructions in all the years after.

Which is EXACTLY why this law is in effect.

My BS meter just pegged. I would charge him with murder with the jury eligible to decide a lesser murder rap. If you don't have 100% surety that what you're shooting is wild game, WTF are shooting for?

I took a hunter safety course and this was DRILLED into us every 15 minutes or so. They repeated it CONSTANTLY throughout the weekend.

I also do not like the way hunters are cut slack when it's a *hunting accident*.

I am pro-gun, pro-second amendment, pro-hunting, and anti-idiot.

I don't get it. Pink where allowed?

Since when is someone regulating what colors non-hunters can wear?

What load? I have a 10" and so far accuracy is nothing to brag about.

The local Buffalo News gives some specifics, including a Google Maps image identifying the site. The shooter resides in the town of Sherman, and was about 2.5 miles from home. The site is along Armenian Road, just out of town, and one can surmise a likely location of the Billquist residence. It seems likely she was walking the dogs along the perimeter of a plowed field behind this residence, and the shooter was across the field, perhaps on the perpendicular edge, but at any rate sighting against the wooded perimeter. I would have to suppose that this was his habit of hunting.

Governor Walker started it in WI two years ago. Half dozen or so other states have jumped on board.
