Wednesday evening, 43-year-old Rosemary Billquist decided to take her two Labrador Retrievers, Sugar and Stella, on a walk in a field behind her western New York home. Little did she know that she would not be returning home.
Shortly later, Rosemary's husband, Jamie, heard his dogs barking. When he went outside to see what the commotion was about, he was greeted by EMTs who were pulling into his driveway. One of the EMTs was also a family friend.
"Jamie, we've got a gunshot wound," the friend said as he rushed into the field.
The victim ended up being Rosemary.
How the Shooting Occurred The Billquist's neighbor, 34-year-old Thomas B. Jadlowski, thought he had seen a deer in the field. He grabbed his single shot handgun and shot Billquist from 200 yards away, The Buffalo News reported.
Once Jadlowski found Rosemary, he applied pressure to his wound as he called 911.
EMTs took Rosemary to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she was pronounced dead.
"They tried saving her," Jamie Billquist said. "It was just too bad. ... It's horrific. It will be with me the rest of my life."
According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, Jadlowski has been fully cooperative with the investigation. So far no charges are being brought forth.
Hunting Violations Jadlowski called 911 at 5:24 p.m., 40 minutes after sunset, to report the incident. New York state's hunting laws prohibit an individual from hunting deer after sunset, sheriff's officials told The Buffalo News.
Because of the violation, the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, Chautauqua County District Attorney's Office and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation are all working together to determine if charges will be filled, and if so, what those charges will be.
If you don't have 100% surety that what you're shooting is wild game, WTF are shooting for?
We tell non hunters to wear orange when walking in woods or field. Not a bad idea in hunting country during hunting season. It prevents a guy who legitimately sees a deer realize there is a human in the foreground or background. Know your backstop.
But this guy saw her and aimed at her. He is either a total ass or he wanted to kill her.
Isn't it a little ... odd ... that he's hunting deer with a single-shot hand gun?
And that he would try to shoot one after dark? And at 200 yards? (I'm visualizing person standing in the evening twilight at the far end of 2 football fields).

That's not odd at all. I'll explain in detail if you want ... suffice to say that "single shot handguns" are built for hunting. It's their design purpose.

It's illegal, immoral, reckless, dangerous, stupid, add your own similar adjectives.

That's not out of bounds, but it is a longer range for deer hunting in the east.

That gets back to the 'after dark', twilight, bad seeing thing. IF YOU CAN'T POSITIVELY IDENTIFY IT as your particular species of animal that you're hunting, DON'T SHOOT IT.
Dude should go up for either voluntary manslaughter or murder in the second degree ... unless something comes up to make it first degree.
Criminally negligent homicide, this careless moron broke enough laws, regulations and safety rules to earn a decade in prison and a lifetime of working off his debt to victim and society.
No. It’s a thing folks do. They have written reams on the subject. These are usually scoped guns. It’s not an unsafe trick if you have practiced your skills. But a human at 200 yards in an open field looks like a human.
Shooting that far with a handgun requires a scope and he should be able to recognize his target with glass. Or don’t shoot.

Earlier reports said 200 yards (600 feet) at/around 5pm which is pretty much dark? Really?? Who hunts normally that time of night with a handgun? Might be he was having an affair and she was going to tell.

Sunset was probably something like 4:57 PM. There is plenty of light after that to identify a target and beyond, and take a safe shot. That’s why many states permit hunting for 1/2 after sundown.
With that being stated, the hunter always is responsible for identifying his target and beyond. The hunter always is responsible for any projectile that he releases.
It sounds like a planned hit to me.
Either he is lying about why he shot her or he is a criminally negligent dumbass that violated the most basic rules of hunting. Either way he should be prosecuted.
Of course someone in the left wing media is going to blame the NRA, but that is like blaming defensive driving instructors for drunk drivers.
...and a very good time to hunt whitetail deer is at dawn and sundown (+/- some minutes) because that’s when they’re guaranteed pretty much to show themselves.
Single shot. Probably a scoped Thompson Center Contender in a rifle caliber. It’s about the same as a scoped rifle if you know what you’re doing.
