Justice Ann Walsh Bradley: Uncle who served at Iwo Jima unable to vote
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel ^ | February 23, 2016 | Patrick Marley

Madison -- A state Supreme Court justice on Tuesday urged Gov. Scott Walker to allow people to use veterans ID cards to vote after her uncle who fought at Iwo Jima was unable to cast a ballot in last week's primary election.

"It makes no sense to me that this proud patriot with a veterans card displaying his photo would be turned away from the polls and denied the right to vote," Justice Ann Walsh Bradley wrote to the Republican governor.

In her letter, Bradley said her uncle had fought at Iwo Jima, the bloody World War II battle that was immortalized in a photo of the U.S. flag being raised on the tiny Pacific island.

Tuesday marked the 71st anniversary of the 1945 flag raising.

Bradley's uncle, Leo Olson of Reedsburg, tried to use his veterans ID card to vote in last week's primary for a seat on the state Supreme Court, but that form of identification can't be used under the state's voter ID law.

Olson does not have a driver's license.

That could soon change because of legislation the state Senate is to take up next month. Even if approved, it may not be in place for the April 5 election, when voters will decide the state Supreme Court race and cast ballots in the presidential primaries....

In Florida, people without a picture ID cab vote using a provisional ballot.

Of course, the Milwaukee Journal. This has been a law for awhile and the dear judge should know that. Those without a license are eligible for a free state ID.

I smell the odor of burning BS. How many options, other than a driver’s license satisfied the identification requirement and what does it take to get one? Certainly, the uncle of a State Supreme Court justice has the wherewithal to put his hands on one.

This is a strawman to open the doors of the polls to thousands of people who have no right to vote, but who will promise to vote for Democrats.

In California the DMV will issue an ID card that is not a driver’s license. My mother never drove and never failed to vote.

So, I’m assuming that the only possible solution the justice is pushing for would be that anyone can vote without ID. Or am I assuming too much?

To vote under the voter ID law, people must show Wisconsin driver's licenses, state-issued ID cards, military IDs, passports, tribal IDs, naturalization certificates or limited types of college IDs, provided they also have documentation they are currently enrolled in school.

That's a pretty wide array of acceptable ID. It's unfortunate that a Veterans' Administration card (assuming it's a picture ID) wasn't included, but it's an understandable oversight which the legislature is fixing with some expedition.

And of course, the gentleman could go on Monday and get a free state (nondriver) ID card. My 15-year-old has one.

This is an abomination. If he cannot vote, then nobody should be able to.

Just watched The Pacific recently (free on Prime. ...a must see) so this really irks me.

This judge is a b1tch who just wants to b1tch about the law. Her uncle can, at no cost, obtain a picture ID from the state. I would suggest the judge drive her uncle to obtain such an ID and the STFU.

Seems unlikely an elderly veteran would be turned away after showing military photo ID. This justice is a Democrat so I have my suspicions the story is embellished to embarrass Walker. But if not and things occurred as she described, the voter ID law ought to be amended to add military and veterans’ ID’s as acceptable proof of identity.

No. You can be a vet without being a citizen

State ID is free and is a valid form of identification. Get over yourself

“...those who are confined because of age, illness or infirmity can vote absentee without having to show an ID...

...The voter ID law also allows people to get free state ID cards for voting from Division of Motor Vehicles offices...”

Sounds like this guy probably shouldn’t be voting at this stage. No disrespect meant. It’s just that not everyone is still competent at 90 years old.

He can vote. He just needs proper ID. Citizens can vote. Just because you have a military ID does not mean you are a citizen
