Man Gives Everything to Care for 12 Military Dogs After Their Return From War
American Kennel Club ^ | 7/28/2015 | Liz Donovan

A dozen four-legged heroes bravely served our country overseas, saving thousands of American lives. But for the past year and a half, they’d been living in limbo at a kennel in Chester, Virginia, while a contract company who purchased the dogs from the Department of Defense tried to place them as therapy dogs. The new job for the dogs never came through, leaving the kennel owner to care for them indefinitely.

They are dogs. How can it be so hard to find them new homes? Only the government can screw up something so bad as to make a loyal working dog homeless. There are literally hundreds of millions of Americans that would gladly welcome a retired service dog in to their homes.

Can’t blame this one on the US government.

The article stated the Department of Defense sold the dogs to a contractor and put them at the gentleman’s kennel, then left them there. He probably had the right to drop the dogs at a local shelter or resell them but elected not to do so.

It appears after 17 months they are going to their former handlers or put up for adoption to general public.

declare them all chihuahuas and they will get free healthcare, housing and the "right" to vote.

Looks to me the gentleman was misinformed about animal therapy, and bought the dogs believing he could roll the purchase over quickly into a profit. Unfortunately things did not happen as he planned, and he became stuck with the dogs, and all of their medical problems besides their normal maintenance.

God Bless him for NOT just dumping the animals as he legally could have. I’m impressed with his sense of responsibility to the animals. Good man.

I know we would love to have some of the dogs, but we are way too old to be taking on more animals at this time in our lives. We’ve already cared for over forty dogs since we have been married. Currently we have just one four year old dog, Ten cats, and two horses remaining of what was once a real zoo.

The gentleman did not buy the dogs.

The article states a contract company bought the dogs from the Defense Department and left them at the kennel. The gentleman took care for the dogs at his expense when he could have easily turned them over to local animal control at taxpayers’ expense. But he elected not to do so.

The contractor or the defense dept. needs to pony up to this guy. Including dumping a dog with shrapnel in his leg. Should have been treated before the sale. They are not some surplus piece of military equipment.

“The contractor or the defense dept. needs to pony up to this guy.”

The contractor is responsible for the dogs but they defaulted on payment for services. The DoD was no longer responsible unless the dogs were “defective”.

Leaving dogs at kennels is not unusual. I volunteer for a German shepherd rescue and we have taken in dogs that were abandoned at a kennel by other rescues.

I am disgusted by this. Government. Dept of Defense..I don’t care. This is outrageous!
These dogs served our country!

We are spending billions on f...g illegal aleins and the Defense dept/govt can’t take care of our Caninne Warriors.???

I wish one of the legislators would pass a bill that prohibits the Defense Dept from doing this...Oh wait, our RHINOs can’t do anything about ISIS or Illegals and the Dems don’t give a dman about our military, human or dogs.!
the conservatives (few) in congress are busy trying to keep the country from going to hell..so guess that’s it.
