I expect to lose electricity within the next 48 hours, for a prolonged period.

I got a foretaste of this impending loss early this afternoon while attempting to reply to Dead Corpse - a momentary taste, but sufficient to cuase me to unplug everything until certain stopgap measures were enacted... which took until 11pm.

A very large living organism less than 100 feet from my home is at long last losing its year-long battle for life. It has put up a remarkable fight. Indeed, to the superficial observer it might appear that it has lingered so long out of some supreme exercise of conscious will. Impossible, of course, as it has no mind at all: It is a 120 foot tall pine tree.

It has been in a fight to endure for a year, as I said. Over the last twelve months it has gone from fifteen degrees from vertical to about thirty degrees. It has been a slow process, but a discernable one. It is slow no longer. Between 9am and 2pm today its pronounced incline advanced some 2 degrees of arc, and it impinged on my power line, causing a momentary blackout.

It is now "falling" at a rate perceptible in hours rather than weeks.

Assuming my rude calculations are correct, it is now pivoting at its base at a rate of one degree every two hours. When it hits forty-five degrees, that shall be all she wrote: Gravity will at that point overmaster whatever mechanical strength the tree bole and roots retain, and the giant shall topple. When it falls, it shall assuredly wipe out the local grid.

I had to pull teeth to get the city to do anything at all about this imminent disaster (and a disaster it is: the local grid powers the local hospital, after all, and the road this tree shall crash down upon is heavily travelled and is a principal route to that same hospital). They dallied through the afternoon and only showed up to inspect the problem as the sun dipped below the westering horizon. Idiots. They cannot get a tree harvester to take it down under control until Monday morning at the earliest. I truly doubt gravity shall forbear out of simple deference to their Christian schedule. One would think God would understand and condone their labor on a sabbath, given the risk to life and property the uncontrolled fall of this monster assuredly poses.

Oh, well.

I was, at long last, able to at least protect my own home. After many calls and some unpleasant words and promises of actions they would not care to endure, I was able to get them to cut my power and shift my power lines around so that they are now ABOVE the bole rather than below it. I shall still lose power when the tree crushes the grid, but at least the power lines are not now likely to rip the anchor mast (by which they are attached to my newly renovated home) through my roof, soffet, and wall.

That's the best I can get them to do - without resorting to the use of diagonal cutters, propane torches, and a ball-peen hammer.

Ah, the joys of dealing with bureaucratic inertia on an otherwise lovely Saturday afternoon, when I would fain have been off riding my beloved horse in the verdant growth of the young spring...

sigh. such a criminal waste of a glorious day.
