The Man-Killing Clam Cheboygan, Michigan
Atlas Obscura ^ | August | elvenking42

Posted on 08/22/2022 1:07:03 PM PDT by dynachrome

SEA SHELL CITY WAS SET up in 1957 and relocated in 1963 to its current location. The kitschy shop has been selling seashells since. Though none of the shells are native to the area, the shop sells an incredibly wide variety.

The crown jewel of the shop is The Man Killing Clam, a bleached shell of a Giant Clam (Tridacna Gigas) that sits proudly along the back wall of the shop. The shell is more than 500 pounds and is ivory in color. There’s a light installed inside the clam to illuminate the maw of the shell. The clam’s image has been featured on local billboards for decades.

The clam is considered “man-killing” because of its ability to trap divers by the feet. However, these clams are not carnivorous.

Thanks dynachrome, cryptobiology/travel ping. Tourist traps are one of the longtime unsung industries of Michigan, and some aren't even open to the public (like "Foamhenge" over on Leonard St, the family's hobby is building homages/fakes). Others are very old, such as Shrine of the Pines.

You can buy a giant clamshell on Ebay (seriously-they-have-everything) but I don’t think any are nearly that big:

Nope. Not going to touch that one.

A 500 pound clam?

I would hit that. If I could. But I can’t. Best leave it to the professionals.

I recall watching a Sea Hunt episode when I was a child in the late ‘50s. The diver, Mike Nelson, got his foot stuck in a giant clam and was going to drown until he took out an underwater flare and shoved it into the clam, which then released him. This seemed so reasonable to a nine year-old that I decided to carry a bunch of flares if I ever went diving to cope with just that sort of thing.
