Ancient hand grenades: Explosive weapons in medieval Jerusalem during Crusades

New analysis into the residue inside ancient ceramic vessels from 11th–12th century Jerusalem has found that they were potentially used as hand grenades.

Previous research into the diverse sphero-conical containers, which are within museums around the world, had identified that they were used for a variety of purposes, including beer drinking vessels, mercury containers, containers for oil and containers for medicines.

This latest research, led by Griffith University's Associate Professor Carney Matheson, confirmed that some vessels did indeed contain oils and medicines, and some contained scented oils, consistent with other recent research into the use of the vessels.

However, his findings also revealed that some of the vessels contained a flammable and probably explosive material that indicated they may have been used as ancient hand grenades...

Associate Professor Matheson said the research also revealed that some of these vessels had been sealed using resin.

It’s interesting. The knowledge we have on these things are based on fragmentary relics, vague manuscripts, and tapestries.

Sometimes new things are discovered. He had a viewer who had been in the Balkans during the wars who said arrows would go through sand bags that AK rounds wouldn’t. He fired reproduction long bow arrows and some of them went through and penetrated a target behind. Another channel used a variety of calibers and did not get similar results.

“An hour and a half I’ll
Never get Back!”

If you’re talking about watching the movie...I can understand.

But the movie was/is a treasure trove of golden meme nuggets that you wouldn’t understand without watching the movie. Seriously, as far as I’m concerned, the internet is only good for a few things to include: cute cat videos, Russian car crash videos, Monty Python memes and FR.

The 7.62mm AK rounds don’t have much sectional density, that is, they are sort of short and fat. Compared to other calibers, they don’t penetrate well. I won’t favor using them on large deer or feral hogs for that reason. The much skinnier, longer, and much older 6.5mm Swedish Mauser bullet, has much more sectional density, penetrates a lot better. Compared to an AK bullet, the sectional density of an arrow would be off the charts. 😀
