Roman soldiers famous received a plot of farmland, and citizenship (if they weren't already Roman citizens) when they were discharged from the Roman army. The terms of service could see troops under obligation to serve between sixteen and twenty five years, depending on the time period. But, being a soldier is a dangerous job, and Roman fought many conflicts. So, how many soldiers actually made it to retirement? How many got that piece of land?

I can’t really blame Hannibal for feeling the way he did, considering the screwing Carthage got in the settlement of the first Punic war and Rome’s subsequent behavior in Spain; that said, I’d still reinstitute the Roman Republic (before the Gracchi screwed everything up) if I could impose my will; it’s been entirely downhill since Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus.
The Gracchi didn't screw up anything, they were murdered by those other non-elected senators who wanted to protect their status and wealth. Senators served at their own suffrance and convenience, until there was a full time chief executive, the Emperor.
They built towns all over for veterans so I guess quite a few. Maybe I should watch to see what they say!
