Scientists solve the mystery of the Etruscans' origins
Livescience ^ | 30 September 2021 | Ben Turner

A new genetic analysis may have finally revealed the origin of the Etruscans — a mysterious people whose civilization thrived in Italy centuries before the founding of Rome.

It turns out the enigmatic Etruscans were local to the area, with nearly identical genetics to their Latin-speaking neighbors

This finding contradicts earlier theories that the Etruscans — who for centuries spoke a now extinct, non-Indo-European language that was remarkably different from others in the region — came from somewhere different from their Latin-speaking neighbors.

Instead, both groups appear to be migrants from the Pontic-Caspian steppe — a long, thin swath of land stretching from the north Black Sea around Ukraine to the north Caspian Sea in Russia. After arriving in Italy during the Bronze age, the early speakers of Etruscan put down roots, assimilating speakers of other languages to their own culture as they flourished into a great civilization.

... The researchers published their findings Sept. 24 in the journal Science Advances.

Compare the headline: Scientists SOLVE the mystery...

To the actual report:

“A new genetic analysis MAY HAVE finally revealed the origin of the Etruscans”.

This is what they do. Lie and deceive.

This is harmless. Other things are not.

Translation....immigrants married local girls

The culture and language are from those who came from elsewhere but locals joined them and intermarried with them, so after a couple of centuries the DNA of the locals prevailed.

Which is why most English have Celtic DNA, not Anglo Saxon DNA, and most Hungarians have Slavic DNA.

Language and culture is not genetic.

I don’t know where the Etruscans are from, and LiveScience may or may not be right, but I do know that the Tuscany region where they lived is beautiful. There may be surprises about where they came from and why, but no mystery as to why they stayed once they got there.

I remember seeing the same symbol in floors in some ancient settlements. Wonder how it became the Nazi symbol...suppose I can google it...but who cares.

Good point. I’ve often wondered why in some such cases like the etrand bulgarians the language of the conquered prevails, while in the case of Turkey and Hungary, the language of the conquerors prevailed.

"appear to be migrants from the Pontic-Caspian steppe"

I think I'm from the Pontiac-Chieftan steppe.

Modern Hungarians have plenty of Slavic and Germanic DNA. The Hungarian government at different times invited settlers in to repopulate the country after various wars, famines, plagues, etc reduced the population.

Hmmm

Only flaw in that slaw is the language...if they all came from the same place why was Etruscan so different?

Etruscan is known to be some kind of an aboriginal language like Basque’s ancestor.

The premise is that the people came from Anatolia and absorbed the local people but took on their language - like the Bulgarians.
