The private spaceflight company's latest Starship prototype aced a high-altitude test flight today (May 5), checking every box from takeoff to touchdown for the first time.
"We are down! The Starship has landed," John Insprucker, SpaceX's principal integration engineer, said during live commentary.
Today's uncrewed test came on the 60th anniversary of the United States' first-ever crewed spaceflight, the suborbital jaunt of NASA astronaut Alan Shepard. The historical parallel is coincidental but appropriate, for SN15's success marks a big step forward in SpaceX's plans to help extend humanity's footprint out into the final frontier.

That fire was a little alarming, but no boom at the end, so I guess it’s all good.
A 100t reusable rocket platform seriously changes what is possible to do in space. This could be the milestone of Henry the Navigator significance.

This is great progress. Space X is moving fast in advancing US capabilities, but I wonder after the Biden team wreck the economy and continue to destroy education, if the US will be able to sustain and advance such a space program from the chaos the Marxists are spreading throughout the country and the ever greater need to deficit spend to support their Woke warriors.
I think we are witnessing live the creation of a new meaning of an old word. What an exciting time to be alive when any two-bit reporter can move the language forward.

This is a bit science fiction turning to fact. You don’t see that much on a major technical achievement in human history on this scale and so fast.
Wonderful accomplishment. I was watching live, but too bad there were too many clouds to see much of what was going on.

There was a complacency with the shuttles, too. Then, STS25 brought it back into perspective.
I think it’s interesting how the news reacts to major incidents or accomplishments.
During the 50s-90s there were a lot of major airline crashes. They got major media and then it tailed off some. Since 2001, there’s been a lot less crashes as tech improved but they still get roughly the same media attention.
Someone could easily do a neural-link PHD study on the rates of media reporting and the actual incidents and the reactions over time, I think.

Actually, IIRC, there is an old science fiction movie from the 50ies along those lines. There was a select group allowed to board a large SPCA ship to escape disaster and millions were excluded and try to storm the ship. Somebody with a better memory can probably name it.
