An ancient palace has emerged from an Iraqi reservoir after water levels dropped precipitously because of a drought.

A lack of rain and the release of water through the Mosul Dam to relieve dry conditions has led to the Mittani Empire site being revealed.

The site was flooded when the Mosul Dam was built in the mid-1980s before archaeologists were able to examine it.

If this is actually dated to 1800 BC and is indeed Mittani it is quite significant. The earliest known Mittani site prior is Kirta dated at 1500 BC, so this would be several hundred years earlier and pushes the Mittani Empire back even earlier than thought.

They got some tablets with inscriptions and saw some wall paintings.

However, the site was submerged shortly after the dig, Puljiz said, adding: "It is unclear when it will emerge again."

Is this what used to be called the Hittite Empire or a different one?

Mitanni came to be a regional power after the Hittite destruction of Amorite.

From the article:
"However, the site was submerged shortly after the dig, Puljiz said, adding: "It is unclear when it will emerge again."

This is indeed an ASTONISHING site.

No doubt, but it appears local authorities may not have appreciated its value. I hope an appropriate calculation was made as to the immediate needs of the locale and the loss of access.

Thank you... I went and tried to find it on google earth and that lake shoreline is bigger than one would think. I was curious if there were any hints of similar structures around the area. It would take awhile.

But I did find an ancient civilization on the top of the mountain where Kursi is located and most of it has no roads to it. Looks like it was terrace farmed, but how did they get water up there? Must have been from a much much wetter time. If so it was a very very long time ago.

-——I love to read about new discoveries in the ancient world!-——

This is not new.... When they built the damn many ancient sites went under water.

Recently saw a documentary on the damn begin built....

Getting the power from the completed damn was far more important at the time....
