How this ocean critter got into tree sap is an interesting mystery.

the article hypothesizes thus: It’s an empty shell that was on a beach, the tree sap flowed all the way down the trunk, onto the beach, and there trapped several sea-related specimens.

Maybe the tree was swamped by rising sea levels due to global warming caused by our early ancestors that just discovered fire.

I have an Ammonite (about 15-inches in diameter) on my front step. Found it 30 years ago.

Was doing some technical work, and the client (a geologist) spent his day searching for Ammonites instead of supervising us. (Fine by me).

Anyway, found the Ammonite, had it in the truck and showed it off to the client - he hadn’t found any yet. Told him we had found it on that ridge over yonder. He spent the next three days climbing around that ridge.

Actually, we had pulled into the Big Boy parking lot in town, and around back was a stone planter box that was sort-of falling apart. One of the “stones” was this big ammonite.

I figured the wall was already falling apart, it was in the back where nobody saw it, so a few more rows of the wall getting a bit more jumbled wouldn’t matter.

Near Fort Worth, Texas. (I’m guessing the statute of limitations on that sort of thing has run out.)

Oh. Our client never did find one.

There is a screw in the middle of this ‘million ‘ year rock. Who knew ammonites we're so resourceful?

Wow! Amazing news…

Amber is such a miracle, capturing and preserving all manner of ancient creatures in pristine condition that would otherwise not be fossilized for us humans to study.

My first thought was to jokingly think, when I saw 99million year old “Ammonite”, was that the biblical timelines must be way way off!

The shells are all empty with no soft-tissue, so the organisms were long dead by the time they were engulfed by resin

That's a shame, it would be great if they could extract DNA from the ammonite as they've done for insects preserved in amber.

I thought the Hebrews killed off the Ammonites shortly after entering Canaan.

Must be a dang flat head screw then. I found thousands of them in jars all over my dad's workshop (May he rest in peace).

No screws. There do seem to be annelids or other insect-type bodies or head.

Why? Easily this very small shell could get washed ashore, survive a very long time, and eventually meet up with trees via breezes and the like.
