Archaeologists find oldest Greek relic in Slovak area

Archaeologists found a significant discovery at a Celtic sacrificial place near the village Slatina nad Bebravou. They discovered relief-decorated shoulder boards made from bronze that were part of a breastplate of a prominent Greek warrior.

"It is the oldest original Greek art relic in the area of Slovakia," said deputy of director of Slovak Archaeological Institute in Nitra, Karol Pieta, as quoted by the SITA newswire.

The relief was made in the Greek colony of Taranto in southern Italy in the middle of the fourth century BC. It came to Slovak territory about one hundred years later.

"There is a justified hypothesis that Celtic warriors, who at that time were moving to the area of middle Danubeland, brought those bronze reliefs here. Theoretically, it is possible that the discovery was stolen from the Delphi oracle, which Celts plundered in the first half of the third century BC," said Pieta for SITA.

The sacrificial place, located about 1.5 kilometres away from a significant Celtic ancient fortified settlement on Udriana hill, was found by accident in 2016, thanks to the attention of the locals.

This place used to be full of blood in the past because Celts used to bring not only material and animal but also human sacrifices to their gods that were ritually burnt, which is why the majority of objects found here are burnt.

CS Lewis, as a former agnostic with a deep love of high pagan culture, wrote a unique book, a northern, perhaps Keltic version of the Cupid & Psyche myth, with a Keltic-Greek cultural connection, in which Psyche is forbidden to see the fabulous lover who comes to her in the dark, but her sisters say that he is a monster, convince her to smuggle in a lamp, she sees him for 1 instant as visually as beautiful as he was on a tactile basis, then he flees and Psyche wanders the world in desolation.

CS Lewis' treatment of this base story, Till We Have Faces, refers to the fact that the sister in the story is an ugly queen, who won her queenship by fighting as a man against a pretender man from a neighboring kingdom; she was trained in fighting by her Greek philosopher-slave, she kills the pretender in battle. She dons a mask, increasing her mysterious power, she outlives most of her subjects, eventually, no one alive has ever seen her face. Till We Have Faces. Google results:

We can only hope the Celts had separated the breastplate from its Greek owner before it got to the “sacrificial place.”

Sounds like they stole it from the Delphi temple.

They were a bunch of happy-go-lucky drunks who amused themselves by burning down neighbors’ cities. They took that habit a bit too far when they burned down Rome. It took a while, but eventually they found out firsthand what the Divine Julius could accomplish when he put his mind to it. :^)
