Adults in the United States are dying from colon and rectal cancers at an increasing rate about age 50, when they should just be beginning screenings, according to a new study from the American Cancer Society.
Since routine screening is generally not recommended for most adults under 50, the cancers found in younger adults are often in advanced stages and more deadly, said Dr. James Church, a colorectal surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
Church, who was not involved in the new study, said he has seen this trend in death rates up close. Last year, on separate occasions, Church saw two 36-year-olds with stage IV colon cancer, he said.
In both of those patients, who had no relation to each other, the cancer spread to their livers, making it so he couldn't operate. Both died, he said. "They both had young families, both little girls, and they lost their father in one case and their mother in the other, forever, because of this nasty disease when it's advanced," Church said.
"It makes a big impact on me, and it makes me keenly interested in trying to solve this issue," he said. "Everybody in colorectal surgical circles is seeing increased incidence of colon cancer in the young, defined as younger than 50."

I’d say it’s all the extra crapping that a high carb and maybe high fiber diet causes.
That may be the case with rectal cancer. Rectal cancer is, I believe, usually caused by the HPV virus, which is the same virus responsible for the most common cause of cervical cancer. The HPV virus is sexually transmitted.
Pampers and Huggies... Should have kept using those good old cloth diapers.
Actually, my theory is that chemically created and sanitized diapers are responsible for a lot of childhood problems... Allergies, cancers, learning disabilities... Who knows? Maybe all the odd maladies that seem to be occurring to today’s youth in such abundance.
The HPV virus is sexually transmitted and causes cervical and rectal cancer. Colon cancer is not sexually transmitted.

I’m not surprised. Many people think they’re eating healthy by eating no meat and lots of carbs.

I never said that colon cancer can be transmitted.
However, you can GET colon cancer from RECTAL INTERCOURSE.
AND, ANYBODY WHO TELLS YOU DIFFERENT .. IS LYING.
Runs in my husband’s family, as well. He had a colon resection in 1994. Regular colonoscopies for him now.

Ah, yes, Propofol. Good stuff. I had one experience, though, that had me singing at the top of my lungs as they were wheeling me to the OR. So embarrassed when I remembered it later. I knew at the time what I was doing, but it seemed okay at the time. :) Fortunately, I don’t remember what happened after they squirted that nasty stuff into my mouth to numb the throat.
People who have type 2 diabetes and take Metformin live longer on average than the people who don't have diabetes and don't take Metformin.
My doctor just increased my dosage at my request because of this news.
I got my first colonoscopy last year, at 61, and ended up with a right hemicolectomy. The resection worked fine, though, no bag to wear, which was good. The doctor wants to scope me again this year, and it might be yearly for a while. On the other hand, my oldest brother had a bunch of polyps the first time and now he only needs a colonoscopy every 5 years.
No fun, but better than cancer.
Metformin really seems to be a wonder drug. I wonder what will happen when these younger people take Metformin for decades.
You are correct. The problem is that the insurance industry won’t cover screening under age 50. My late wife was diagnosed with Stage IV, it was all through her liver, one month before her 50th birthday. She fought it for three and a half years.
The radiologist who read the liver CT reported either ovarian or colo-rectal cancer (tumor morphologies are similar). The doctors ordered a colonoscopy to see if the origin was there. It was. The insurance company initially denied payment because she wasn’t old enough to get screened.
Many doctors and all insurance companies will fight tooth and nail against screening before age 50. The doctors think that on average the risks outweigh the benefits. On average - of course if you are one of the unlucky folks who aren’t the average, you just get to die.
For the insurance companies it’s simple actuarial math. Screen ten thousand to catch one cancer case. It’s cheaper to pay a million dollars in futile radiation, chemo and surgery. If the scales tip, colonoscopies will be mandatory from eighth grade on.
I had an endoscopy back in April yeah its not fun, the numbing spray in the mouth is terrible made me gag a bunch of times..but after that I have no clue what happened..hopefully I didnt talk about flying pigs(The regular sedation I talk like crazy apparently LOL) whats good about Profofol is once they stop the drip you wake up fast..with regular sedation you can be in recovery for hours before they let you leave
