Worried about osteoporosis? Take turmeric! Indian spice improves bone density by up to 7%, study reveals

Turmeric helps to build and repair bone mass in the elderly, a new study reveals.

Taking a supplement of the popular Indian spice improves bone density by up to seven per cent over six months, researchers found.

A compound in turmeric, known as curcumin, is thought to balance out cells that remove ageing parts of bone before it is replaced, according to previous findings.

Almost three quarters of elderly people suffer declining bone density, which can cause osteoporosis and is responsible for around 65,000 potentially fatal fractures each year in the UK.

Researchers from Genoa University analysed otherwise healthy men and women with an average age of 70 who were all suffering declining bone density.

Bones in their heels, jaws and fingers were measured at the start of the study using ultrasound scanning.

After six months, those taking a daily supplement of turmeric and soy lecithin boosted their bone density by seven per cent.

Combining turmeric with soy lecithin is thought to prevent it from being destroyed by the stomach, so it reaches the small intestine where it is absorbed.

I take turmeric because it is an anti-inflammatory.

I mix it with water into a thick paste and try to drink it.

Any attempt to make it more palatable using almond milk or honey is simply a waste of almond milk and honey.

It tastes like dirt. It decreases my back pain for a good 48 hours after taking it, but I take a lot, like two heaping tablespoons per glass.

I once had a black eye from a bicycle tumble. A few days later, I went to get some Indian food, it helped it clearly. Lots of cumin/tumeric. They say if one should get a black eye, that is useful.

I mix it with water into a thick paste and try to drink it.

You should also add a little black pepper, and the almond milk, or something else with fat. Black pepper and a little fat increase absorption.

PS: If you go my route, then eschew the white man’s store, and get it at the Indian store.

It costs about one twentieth there what an equivalent amount would cost at the white man’s store. I get it in 1 lb bags for about $7.

As a prostate cancer survivor of 15 years, I have been taking turmeric daily for the past 12 months.

1. Indian men get less prostate cancer than western diet men.
2. In a Petri dish, turmeric kills prostate cancer cell cultures.

It dissolves well in whole warm milk; quite tasty in fact. I usually mix with a touch of coffee for a relaxing beverage in the winter.

“they also die on average 10 years sooner then Americans.”

Without turmeric, they would be dying 25 years sooner.

folks if you have any kind of a faulty immune system, like arthritis, or colon problems or some such autoimmune disease- be very careful as tumeric increases the immune system which you definitely do NOT want to do with an autoimmune disease-

If you have such a condition be very careful about taking ‘miracle herbs’ or vitamins, or sugars or any such immune boosting substances-you may actually be shortening you life if you do so, or making your condition worse- giving premature flare-ups- causing worse inflammation
