American families are getting smaller and yet chickens are getting larger.

As we begin 2017, Americans can look back at 2016 as yet another year with record-high chicken consumption—an average of 89.6 pounds per person. That’s more than three times as much as our grandparents ate.

Chickens we eat today are twice as big as they were 60 years ago. In 1955, the average weight of chickens sold on market was 3.07 pounds, while the number for the first half of 2016 was 6.18 pounds, according to National Chicken Council, a nonprofit trade organization based in Washington, D.C.

If you love home made fried chicken,it is hard to find 2.5 to 3 lb fryers. The one pound or more breasts are tough and tasteless. We cut them up and pound them out and marinate in lemon juice.

just like pants.

True dat, just the other day I took a pair of Army OD's out of the basement closet and tried them on only to find they had shrunk so much I couldn't pull them over my waist. Must be too much humidity in the basement.......

Former vice president Henry Wallace was among the first to develop the new bigger breed of chickens.

I do an overnight soak in buttermilk.

Then pan fry in a cast iron skillet.

We have raised several different breeds over the years but always come back Golden Comets. They have a tremendous personality and love to talk to you. I have one that sits on my shoulder and thinks she is parrot.

GG2, come on over to our house. We have over 100 buckeyes the Mrs made last week. We were hoping to enjoy them tomorrow but the football team forgot to show up against Clemson.

I thought they were pumping the meat full of water.

They are. Chickens and turkeys. Why brine your Thanksgiving turkey since it's been sitting in a salt water bath since it left the processing company.

We buy all our chicken at Sprouts. Its like the chicken you got when you were a kid. And you can get the small ones. The taste and texture is great!

If that’s so, how did Popeyes end up peddling what appears to be freeze dried chicken? Last time I went there it cost me $35 and I ended up marveling at the ziploc bag of leftover chicken. Tiny. The drumsticks looked like buffalo style wings.

A book titled The Dorito Effect goes into this at length. The book is a good read.

I actually remember most of the supermarket chicken when I was a kid in the early '70s being bigger and having a yellower tone than most of the stuff today. Kentucky Fried Chicken was then and remains small. Supermarket rotisserie chickens are also smaller.

My big sister always told me that this reminds her of me. Chickens were more Chuck Norris-esque in the old days. :)

Ron White said one of his rules for the new year was not picking up dog poop.

We are the top of the food chain and the only animal that picks up another animals poop.
