"Striking gold" is mainly a term to express when someone gets really lucky nowadays, but by golly, someone has actually done it.
A 145-ounce gold nugget has been reportedly found in Victoria, Australia by a real life prospector and could be worth more than A$250,000 ($190,710) when it goes to auction. The big 'ol nugget has been named "Friday's Joy" on account of the day it was found.

Went to the Crater of Diamonds State Park this past spring.
People near me found some, and a couple of large ones have been found since.
I probably stepped on a big one!
I did find a micro diamond, showed it around and than lost it!!!
A fun time with many nice and helpful people.

I have been there. It is a big open field that gets plowed every day. You get a sifter bucket and shovel, and you just try your luck.

In the US the land owner may not own(or in possession of) the mineral rights. I hold a great deal of rights in AZ,NV and Utah and even a few in TX. This nugget was found in Australia - not sure about there but I suspect it is the same.
Of course he had a primo Minelab gold machine and then found it a foot deep. Their top end machines will find a 1 ounce nugget 3 or 4 feet deep and in Australia that means spending the next few hours in the ferocious sun chiseling through soil that probably has compressive strength equal to 6 sack concrete while praying it’s not an old horseshoe or a fork (gold machines don’t do discrimination well if at all).
One of our local forumites shelled close to 4K for their GPX 3000(?) a few years back and scored about 18 ounces of nuggets on their first trip that were all about 4 inches deep :-)
When I was looking for property in NV I wanted to get rights but the seller of the section I settled on elected to retain them and halve the price. I figured it was OK, I could always buy or lease them back if I found something and I’ve got 2560 acres of BLM immediately adjacent I can stake if I found stuff trending there or off it.
