It's been 2 1/2 months since the last birdy thread was posted. Florida is a bit too hot for this old man to get out and shoot much in high summer. However, today I had a visitor. A little blue heron was feeding on my front lawn. That seemed a tad unusual.
There was also a flock of white ibis. This time of year the ibis begin to gather in larger and larger flocks preparing for their winter migration. I got a face shot of this youngster. Their eyes are cool
Several weeks ago I saw a family of Florida Mottled ducks on lake Jackson. This family started out with 10 hatchlings, only 2 appear to have survived. Snakes, raccoons and gators have to eat too.
Then there is my new favorite bird, the limpkin.
For good measure, here's a shot of yesterdays sunset on Lake Jackson.
Out west, the white-faced ibis (very similar to the glossy ibis out east) is a regular flocker. In fact, I detected three different flocks today in a desert riparian area while conducting a bird survey.
Also got a least bittern today in a marshy area. Hard to see but fun to watch.
We enjoyed. Thanks for posting Islander7.
I’m in Phoenix, so I can sympathize with your situation in not getting outside to shoot birds because of the heat. I tried the other day when it was only 103, but the humidity was so bad I was pouring sweat standing still. Too hot for birds anyway. I’m probably out of it until the end of September or so. That’s when the weather starts to get really nice around here.
Very nice.
You are right about the eyes. The tufted titmouse is one of my faves for adorable eyes. Plus they’ve got their cute little hats... :)
Thanks so much for posting. I have those birds plus peacocks. They’re beautiful but they are so loud
Beautiful photos! Thank you from a bird lover and sunset watcher :-)
You are great at taking pictures. Thanks for sharing.
Nice work, Islander7.
GREAT pics Islander!
certainly did enjoy!
This fellow who lives a few towns over from me keeps a gentlemans farm of sorts. He get loads of chicks of various types, baby goats, and a few other things, and keeps them till they are “teens”. Then he sells everybody. When I went to get some hens I saw that he had a few unusual birds and one of them was a albino peacock. I took pictures with my phone but they were awful. He was keeping that one as the are quite rare.
He said he only likes raising the baby animals and chicks because they are so cute, but once they are past the baby stage they are sold. Weird, but I get it. He gets new babies every year, and he can have tons of them to enjoy. I wonder if he still has that white peacock.
I love your birdy threads. Please add me to your ping list :)
Beautiful pics!
Thank you or sharing them with us!
Love it. Thank you. Haven’t been birding all summer, due to the STILL unrepaired damage from Hurricane Sandy at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.
Of the birds who come too my feeder...the Tufted Titmouse is a favorite.
Lovely photos!
Great shots! Thanks so much for sharing with us!
Pls add me to your birdy Ping.
I love water birds. Around here in the mountains of WNC there is the occasional blue heron to be found along waterways along with king fishers and a once in a blue moon egret.
Humming birds, hawks and song birds are the typical fare around here. Cardinals, blue jays, gold finches, blue birds, robins, sparrows, swallows, wrens and crows are the daily visitors or fly-bys.
They are just precious, aren’t they. They can get so excited.
Today there was a funny incident involving a white breasted nuthatch and a female goldfinch. The nuthatch swooped in to grab a seed, but then started feeding the goldfinch. Then he got out another one for her and these two were just kind of looking at each other, gently touching their beaks. He would dip in again to find another seed for her...
I suppose there must be some normal bird behavior explanation, but I’d never seen that. It looked like love at first sight. That nuthatch was smitten. Bless their little hearts. :)
