Antique SKS rifle used by Dallas Killer (No Ar-15 used)

Initial reports from Dallas described multiple snipers with AR-15s #weaponsofwar. The ongoing propaganda theme among the tabloids is that the AR-15 has become the weapon of choice for terrorists and mass shooters. It turns out that the terrorist in Dallas question used an antique, the SKS, (according to CBS News) but the facts never keep the press from a good propaganda theme.

The SKS was designed in the 40’s in Russia. It is such a basic rifle that it is legal in California with no modification. With its fixed ten round magazine, the SKS is everything that the gun haters in California say a rifle must be. It is not black, no pistol grip, no flash hider or folding stock. It even shoots a intermediate power cartridge, 7.63 X 39. It is used as a cheap hunting gun across the US. I am sure that at this moment, some law maker in California is writing new legislation to close the mad man with an antique rifle loophole.

There have been bows and arrows since the stone age. OK for hunting, but never used in combat by gentlemen. It would have been dishonorable not to face your foe directly.

You may be right. They said he was in a garage . I keep thinking they had him cornered but he was in a parking garage. Mat have been the best solution but still a little troubling.

“There have been bows and arrows since the stone age. OK for hunting, but never used in combat by gentlemen.”

If you engage in combat as a gentleman, chances are you are going to lose. War is not a game of cricket, played by gentlemen in white suits. War is a brutal, horrific endeavor meant to destroy one’s enemy. By your standards, submarine crews and high-altitude bomber crews (since both attempt to employ stealth to get into position to launch their attacks) are ungentlemanly scoundrels, deserving only of contempt and derision.

“I would go to war any day with M1 and modern optics over a semi AR15 and all the barbie toy addons that one can put on it. The M1 in skilled hands can be absolutely lethal at 600+ yards everyday.”

I could not agree more. Give me an M1 Garand or an M1A (the non-select fire version of the M14) and I would feel quite adequately armed in a fight.

Yep, the possibility of getting a 6th cop killed was probably on the bottom of their solution list. So they served up a remote bomb.

I hope they told the suspect they were sending him in a snack to show good faith.☺

I’m just reminding you what people used to believe back in the day when there were still gentlemen in the world. And yes they did fight face to face. They were more brave than you can imagine.

You may not know much about history if you don’t know that submarine attacks used to be considered contemptible. British General Arthur”Bomber” Harris was shunned by many of his peers after wwii.

There might be fewer wars in this world if they required the older kind of courage and skill, instead of just pushing a button.

But if you scroll down on this site you can see that the side impact is clearly .22 caliber bullet holes.

Sounds like more BS.

Looking at that photo on the Daily Mail website, I'm not convinced those are bullet holes. Automotive sheet metal bends more when a bullet hits it, rolling the edge inward. Those holes look almost like someone made them with a drill bit.

IIRC, it was Navy Arms that started that trend.

I’ve studied history my entire life. My degree is in History. Your ubiquitous historical “gentleman” is largely a myth, and at best is anecdotal, restricted to a miniscule number of examples, an exception rather than the rule. It makes for good literature, but poor reality.

They might not be. They are definitely not 7.62x39 holes. 22 caliber holes could easily be drill bit size though.

If you’re a student of history, you may have heard of an 18th century philosophy called “utilitarianism”. It seems to encapsulate your ethical views. There’s never been a shortage of people wishing to live unmoored from morality. But for the rest of us, morality is important.
