There be dragons? Creatures you might find on a real journey to the centre of the Earth

....Science, of course, has a habit of turning the fantastic into the prosaic. But 150 years on from Verne’s work, researchers have actually begun a project to drill through the Earth’s crust for the first time, hoping to penetrate more than 5km beneath the sea bed to reach the mantle below. Needless to say, it is most unlikely to reveal monsters living inside the Earth. But if we do look down in search of life, what do we find?

The best way to find underground creatures is to travel into the depths of a cave. The first things you’re likely to come across are spiders – big ones, such as Meta menardi (the European Cave Spider). Meta is actually a troglophile, a species that can spend its whole life underground but can also live outside caves. Living to at least 30 metres inside caves, it makes webs to catch flies, but mostly preys on woodlice and millipedes on the cave walls. Look up and you may see its teardrop-shaped egg cocoons hanging from the roof.

The bacteria living near deep sea vents and deep underground could possibly be the renewable source for oil creation.

“Living to at least 30 metres inside caves, it makes webs to catch flies, but mostly preys on woodlice and millipedes on the cave walls. “

I first read this and thought the spiders were 30 meters long and live in caves. Frankly a 30 meter long spider can live where’ve the heck it pleases.

Around 1960 there seemed to be a lot of interest in “Project Mohole”. I remember reading about it in “My Weekly Reader”.

I think it was going to drill through the earth’s crust and discover what was inside. I think it was somewhere in the Caribbean.

It sort of died out without so much as a whimper.

#10: IS she an actress? I saw one who looked like her in Jurassic Park IV or V.

There is an uncanny resemblance to Ronnie Howard’s daughter, Bryce...could be her.

I think everyone knows there is a crust, mantle and core. he question is if there are bacteria that live on emissions from the mantle.

As in Dr. Thomas Gold’s Deep Hot Biosphere producing hydrocarbon compounds rendering oil and natural gas??

And thus the deep drilling. The core is so small that they could miss it if there are just hot spots.
