The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Getting colder here in west Michigan. High 30’s. I did look at my garden from the house today. I could see my 6 broccoli plants, still green but I have a doe who comes out at night and munches away. It’s going to be a long winter!
Don't forget to use lemon juice to prevent 'browning' during the dehydrating process
I read that pine needles are good as they help acidify the soil. How deep did you go with the straw?
Dried banana is not bad. I bought some at the county fair here a few years ago

As for gardening, it was a disappointing year. I’m solely to blame. Did a rotten job and not much grew. The winter gardens seem to be doing well. Two rucola patches doing well along with the kale. Beets are managing, much to my surprise.
Since I’m a beekeeper, more or less organic is my only choice.
You can also freeze the overripe ones and toss them in a yonanas machine. Makes a surprisingly good frozen treat.
ARE YOU TELLING ME TODAY IS FRIDAY??? It’s been a week like that on the left coast. We have beautiful clear skies with morning lows down to 30 degrees and we still have a few flowers blooming. I’ll post some photos when I get them on Flickr and formatted for FR. Yesterdays dinner was perfect and delicious as only Lady Bender can do consistently. the drumsticks were over done because I forgot to tent them with foil and Mrs Bender forgot the dinner rolls in the freezer..
Dress warmly, carry an umbrella. Hopefully you’ll be invited to stand just inside the door. We too will be ringing the bell, but don’t know the date yet.
Our Thanksgiving was wonderful with fantastic friends. Had a lot from our gardens.
For those left standing after our bbqs, I fix creamed beef the following morning. 1 or 2# beef, fried in bacon grease, 1 large onion, cubed, 4 full stalks celery, finely sliced across the rib, 1/2 C. flour shaken in 2 cups milk. Don’t move the gallon of milk. As the “gravy thickens add more milk to your favorite thickness, here is where I add salt to “my” taste and pepper. Now if your using canned dried beef. Slice the dried beef, cube the onions and sliced celery. Warm your frying pan, add veg oil & butter, add the onions and celery, cook till onions are transparent,(I stir the veggies constantly, don’t want them to brown) Add the dried beef. Make your “gravy”, but this time mix whipping cream with the milk. Proceed to your desired gravy thickness, and don’t forget to add salt & pepper to your taste. I serve both of these with fresh bisquits, my sister uses toast. The first recipe will give you brown gravy and the second will give you a white cream gravy. I’ve given estimated measurements, because I seldom measure, and I cook according to the number of people eating.

Rainy and cool here too. But had to go over to McDonald’s to meet the gang over coffee and such. I tried one of their “doughnuts” ugh. It was a little bundt with too much frosting. But the conversations were great, and I ate part of hubby’s bisquit.
You know I use a lot of over ripe bananas with all sorts of fruits and even some veggies with yogurt and any sort of juice to make smoothies.
Sounds normal tubebender. We always forget something. Thank goodness, I had cranberries in the freezer, from last year. I always buy a bunch of bags each year, cause we use them all year. Well anyway, I’d forgotten to make cranberry sauce beforehand, so we had warm cranberry sauce with dinner.
I use that freezer a whole lot. Scrap vegetables are great in a soup. Frozen fruit goes into the yonanas machine. I kinda want to get into smoothies, though. I’ve got a goji berry bush that will produce (I hope) and I love goji berries in a smoothie.
LOL I damn near dropped the turkey on the floor moving it to the carving board. I have tried to invite Aton Brown over to carve the bird for me because he makes it so easy. Guess what I’m having for dinner tonight. Same thing I had for breakfast and lunch...

We had a few family over and ate way to much. I too don’t eat sugar especially. We are in Mo too and have laid aside about 5 cords to feed the wood boiler through the winter. Hot water at 150 plus is a great side benefit. We are still eating tomatoes picked after the last hard frost, placed in the basement, and hope to have them yet at Christmas. Pray all goes well with you and yours.
I was 3 days late getting the rice hull mulch on the Garlic patch and the chickweed had sprouted @#$%^&^%$
A question. I have real problem with cabbage moths. Have y’all tried using something like a dipel spray? Had any success?
I can’t use most pesticides because of the bees.

We used floating row covers with considerable success on most cole crops. It is 6 foot wide and comes in a roll and one brand is Remay
