The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Good afternoon gardeners. It's a rainy day, gray skies, and 42 degrees here in Mo. My tootsies are cool, time to dig out the winter socks, the summer cotton ones just are not doing the job. Not much gardening this week-just cooking and preparation for Thanksgiving.

We had a small group for the day, and I had more energy to get it done this year than for the last 10 years. Now feeling the after effects of eating carbs. Ugh. While I didn't gorge or anything. I did have my first mashed potatoes, yeast roll, cornbread dressing, and a tiny sliver of pumpkin pie since last year.

I guess those insulin receptors are still needing repair. Probably going to take a nap soon. We got the Netflix to TV thing figured out. Started with season 1 of TWD and had a Marathon TV fest. LOL

Hope everyone had a great Holiday and is doing well. Think of me tomorrow-I'll be ringing the Salvation Army Bell, and it's to be colder and raining-never was good at picking days for stuff like that. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Over here the air is clear, cold (28 degrees F), and dry.
The ground is not frozen yet so I am still working on terracing my hillsides.
We recently replaced the old wooden bridge with concrete; so I got a bunch of the old bridge timbers and I am using them for the terrace walls.
The timbers are 4”x16”x 14’; driving 1 1/2 gal pipe sections into the ground 4’ deep, the timbers go on the uphill side of the pipe then backfill from the slope to level. Should work out great for vegetable gardens and a small vineyard.
Just out of curiosity, does anybody have a good old fashioned recipe for chipped beef on toast, kind of miss my old Marine Corps breakfast favorite.

A toasty 74 here with rain but 43 about 60 miles NW. I think there's a chance there's a cold front on the way. The weatherman says that the cold front will hook up with warmer Hurricane Sandra moisture and we could see 4 inches. Just another fall shower in Texas.

Otherwise no gardening this week. Every time I was planning on doing the fall string trimming something came up, either weather, thanksgiving chores, what have you. I was really busted up about it.

My Dad was in the Coast Guard, and he used to make this. Never shared the recipe though.

It was 91 degrees yesterday on Guam

We have banana plants setting fruit.

Since each plant will produce 100-150 pounds of bananas and we have three plants I think i need to buy a dehydrator

At one point I had tears in my eyes about it. I was cutting onions at the time.

5th MEB : " ..the timbers go on the uphill side of the pipe then backfill from the slope to level.

Did you put in any "deadman" to hold the wall in place, due to ground creep?
The "deadman" are a system of timbers constructed in the form of the letter "T" , which prevent the walls from tilting downhill, due to ground creep and gravity.

Try this:

CREAMED CHIPPED BEEF
http://www.cooks.com/recipe/9p6bq49z/creamed-chipped-beef.html

Read the comments .... people seem to like this recipe and are saying things like “Best U.S.Marine Corps breakfast ever” & “6 years 5 months and 23 days in the 82nd airborne division and I never missed a meal when S.O.S. was on the menu. It was my favorite meal”.

I used to tear up too. Now I use a chef knife and 4 whacks, pull off the onion from the skin and throw them in the food processor, or whatever.

Proud_texan :" At one point I had tears in my eyes about it. I was cutting onions at the time."

I saw a chef program on PBS, where the chef/cook wore motorcycle goggels while cutting a large amount of onions.
The only other thing to avoid crying is to use a candle, on close proximity to the cutting board .
The updraft of the lit candle, created a hot air column, which lifted the capiscum up, and out of hamrs way.

Looking for tips on mulching my strawberry bed. I failed to do so last fall and the result was not good (multiple mornings I saw -33°F here in NW Pennsylvania.

I would like to save what is left of the patch. If I use pine needles can I just completely cover the plants now even though they are still green? Tips?

IIRC, we covered our patch with straw while still green in years past.

Me neither! Hate the cold and hate to be wet. Stay warm. I’m drinking hot tea, broth with cream, and black coffee alternating.

Broth before eating, coffee after eating(instead of desert) and tea in between meals.

It’s cold, wet, and miserable in Central TX, too. At least we don’t live in Dalhart!

I reskinned my Texas Prepper’s greenhouse last week. Everything in there is doing great. My one cat whacked me on the nose when I poked my head in the door awhile ago. He thinks it’s his greenhouse.

Qiviut:" CREAMED CHIPPED BEEF"

Normally , I don't question cooks.com for best tasteing recipie and simplicity.
On 10/19/2015, there was listed an original recipie for "US Army SOS " for those who prefer nostalgia.
