Fake Olive Oil, It's Everywhere. Most Likely In Your Kitchen

According to the book Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil, illicit manufacturers slap an Italian flag and the name of an imaginary producer on the label and dump this stuff on the US market, where consumers are easy pickings.

But consumers in the US aren’t the only victims. Studies done in Australia and New Zealand found that half of their Mediterranean imports were fake, too. Anywhere olive oil is in demand is a possible target.

How do you fake olive oil? Olive oil can be diluted with poor quality oils or sometimes there is no real olive oil at all. Cheap and unhealthy soy or canola oils are colored with industrial chlorophyll and flavored with artificial flavorings. Yum. [....]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNsGzmtCd8I

This video is one in a series of videos and websites which are being posted on FreeRepublic in the coming days in regard to nutritional health. In the beginning these videos were being posted as a rebuttal to an article and comments in another posted article on FreeRepublic remarking on obesity. Due to the strong interest in obesity and nutritional health as it relates to Type II Diabetes, the videos relating to Type II diabetes and how to reverse the progression of the disease are being moved forward among the other video topics in this series. Expect to see a mixture of videos regarding the role of carbohydrates in the diet and their relationship to nutritional health topics ranging from metabolic syndrome and Diabetes to dementia, Parkinson's Disease, Altzheimer's Disease, and more. The effects of standard government sponsored diets, health association diets, and alternative diets upon everyday nutrition, sports nutrition, and diabetic nutrition will be mixed in with videos focused on the use of various low carbohydrate and high fat (LCHF) diets, such as the ketogenic diets as a treatment for Type II Diabetes.

Anyone who is interested in following this series of posts about nutritional health is invited to request a ping.

I don’t think anyone is obese because they used fake olive oil.

Gubmint must regulate to save dumb buyers buying fake stuff. Where is personal responsibility? Do a little homework and don’t get cheapass “olive” oil from walmart.

Not in my kitchen.

I buy only 100% pure, certified, California Olive Oil.

It's certified by a growers council that is quite finicky on what they'll certify. And they conduct random tests and site visits.

It's the finest olive oil in the world too.

Does this California group get finicky about ensuring that the olives are grown by people who are entitled to work in this country, is do illegals get a pass?

And if this council of employers gives the illegals a pass, why do you believe them about all of the details related to the quality of the product? That seems....illogical.

I bet it is pricey? I can only afford the cheaper one like Star Extra Virgin Olive Oil, hope that is not a fake one.

You can test your oil at home.
The freezing point of EVOO is 39DegF.
Set your fridge for 37DegF and put a sample of your oil in overnight.

If there is liquid oil present with the frozen olive oil, then you got a special blend!!

This Snopes article partially debunks this claim that 69 percent of all olive oils found in supermarkets are probably fake.

Generally I stay away from the mass-produced big name olive oils but I keep a bottle of Colavita for cooking purposes. I prefer to pay a little extra to get the artisan brands that are out there. Good olive oil is not cheap, expect to pay $20 or more for a 750ml bottle, so if you see something on sale that is low-priced, I would be wary.
