Sixth extinction, rivaling that of the dinosaurs, should join the big five, scientists say

Earth has seen its share of catastrophes, the worst being the “big five” mass extinctions scientists traditionally talk about. Now, paleontologists are arguing that a sixth extinction, 260 million years ago, at the end of a geological age called the Capitanian, deserves to be a member of the exclusive club. In a new study, they offer evidence for a massive die-off in shallow, cool waters in what is now Norway. That finding, combined with previous evidence of extinctions in tropical waters, means that the Capitanian was a global catastrophe.

“It’s the first time we can say this is a true global extinction,” says David Bond, a paleontologist at the University of Hull in the United Kingdom. Bond led a study that was published online this week in the Geological Society of America Bulletin. He adds that in magnitude, the Capitanian event was on par with the dinosaur-killing extinction 66 million year ago. “I’d put this up there with it, albeit with slightly less attractive victims,” Bond says.

Crikey. Another extinction event occurred without us being the cause of it. What are the odds. /sarc :)

And Helen Thomas survived them all, even the ones she caused.

Nonsense. Mere speculation—prove it. Classical evolutionary theory postulates 95% of all species are already extinct. Which species are you talking about? These theories and their adherents recycle themselves, they need an audience to sell their fish oil to and a job. Nonsense.

Clapham thinks the Capitanian is probably 30th or 40th in the hierarchy of extinctions, not sixth.

One thing is certainly clear, extinction events are common and regular even if they are not all global in scale. Life forms come and go and it will happen again.

Implied is we humans are a life form.

Implied by logic, that is a certainty, but I didn’t infer it by design. I take for granted that most people would consider humans a life form.

Seven posts and no one’s blamed George W. Bush yet.

That’s gotta be some kind of record.

Life forms come and go and it will happen again.

Except for spotted owls, peebles jumping mice, and delta smelt.

We are in a spiral galaxy and we go round and round the black hole. We are bound to bump into something now and then.

I think homophobic Christian pizza shop owners may be responsible for this tragedy.

Thanks Utilizer. Since this is coming out of the UK, without yet looking at it closely I'll jump to the conclusion that this is some kind of global warming / no sudden extinctions nonsense from the Church of Darwin.

A massive amount of these extinctions is simply the wholesale import of pests and rival plants across the world.
Think brown snakes in the tropics, zebra mussels in the Great Lakes, snakes in Florida, transplanted crops plus their diseases and pests around the world.
The end result will be a loss of genetic diversity as many niche species are replaced by hardier international varieties. But the result will also be a more stable ecosystem as niche species that can’t adapt are replaced by those that can, except for those areas where people don’t live, farm or modify.

That’s why when liberals worry about extinction it’s such a nonsense argument. That’s the history of the world and who decides which species living at what time period are OK to save?

Exactly! It appears to be an inevitable cycle of life on this planet. Like ocean tides rising and falling there is nothing anyone can do about it. It’s hard to make an objective case that it’s either good or bad. So far life in general has survived them all. Our challenge is to not make the list of losers when the next big event comes along.

No, this about a 260 mya extinction event at the end of the Captian. I wanted to Google this because I thought that 260 mya was the great Permian extinction, but my computer is doing funny things and I could not see Google.
