Up or Down? Photo of Cat on Stairs Confuses the Internet

Just as soon as the Internet got over whether "The Dress" is white and gold or blue and black, another viral debate has been sparked by a photograph of a cat.
The photograph shows the cat halfway through climbing a staircase, prompting the question, is the cat going up or going down the stairs?

Shadow says down. If up, one would trip on the ledge making the shadow. Not a puzzle.

At least this is an extension of an old optical illusion. Technically, here, it could be either.
Unlike the white and gold dress, where if anyone saw anything different, they were just trying to be a pain in the ass.

Yes....overhand/side profile of the tread on top of the riser is seen.
However, I have never seen those kinds of diagonal braces(?) at the ends. Seems to me like a worse trip hazard, particularly for going down the stairs.

The boards of frames on the steps would be major tripping hazards if the cat was going up. It is obviously going down.
