The modern European gene pool was formed when three ancient populations mixed with one another within the last 7,000 years, Nature journal reports.
Blue-eyed, swarthy hunters mingled with brown-eyed, pale skinned farmers as the latter swept into Europe from the Near East.
But another, mysterious population with Siberian affinities also contributed to the genetic landscape of the continent.
The findings are based analysis of the genomes of nine ancient Europeans.
Agriculture originated in the Near East - in modern Syria, Iraq and Israel - before expanding into Europe around 7,500 years ago.
Multiple lines of evidence suggested this new way of life was spread not just via the exchange of ideas, but by a wave of migrants, who interbred with the indigenous European hunter-gatherers they encountered on the way.
But assumptions about European origins were based largely on the genetic patterns of living people. The science of analysing genomic DNA from ancient bones has put some of the prevailing theories to the test, throwing up a few surprises.
Genomic DNA contains the biochemical instructions for building a human, and resides within the nucleus of our cells.

They have based their conclusions on the DNA of two people in Europe 7,000 and 8,000 years ago? That can’t be accurate at all. Last I heard King Tut was Irish.

That map is misleading. We know from history that the 2nd group didn’t migrate mainly through Anatolia, but by crossing the strip of land between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, then turning west.
Also, and this is typical, their dating is misleading. The migration may have begun around that time, but it happened in a number of waves, with the largest groups of immigrants not arriving until thousands of years later.
Just being a bit sarcastic. The egyptologists did the Tut DNA but did not release the results. PBS or someone scanned the exhibit with a TV camera and some doctor read the DNA results and said Tut was Irish. Later they said that half of the males in Europe were related to Tut. This was published in a DNA ancestry magazine.

There’s another one about the Jewish guy who wants to be buried in an Irish cemetery, because he’d be sure to be in G_d’s presence. I’ve never found the words to that one.

There is actually a lot of DNA evidence that there was also a southern Mediterranean route via Crete, Sicily / Italy to Spain.
The 1876 election came down to a commission of 15 men--5 from the House of Representatives, 5 from the Senate, 5 from the Supreme Court--to decide the 20 disputed electoral votes. If all of them went to the Republican candidate Hayes, he would be President by a vote of 185-184. If any of them went to the Democrat Tilden, he would be President. The 15 men included 7 Republicans, 7 Democrats, and 1 Independent (one of the Supreme Court justices). The Independent did not want to have half the country mad at him so he managed to get chosen for a Senate seat and resigned his Supreme Court position. The remaining justices were all Republicans so the commission wound up with an 8-7 Republican majority and Hayes became President.
