A question for Mississippi FReepers: is the Delta safe for a tourist?
Self | 9/8/'14 | Zionist Conspirator

Because of my heritage as a descendant of Southern Unionist Republicans, I used to really admire Black Americans and their culture, going all the way back to the works of Joel Chandler Harris and B.A. Botkin. Because of this I've long been a fan of traditional acoustic country blues, especially from the Mississippi Delta (Charlie Patton!).

I've been longing for years to visit the Dockery Plantation between Ruleville and Cleveland, which is where the blues was allegedly born and where so many of the great Delta bluesmen played and/or worked as farm hands. Several years ago I actually took a trip down there but missed the plantation because I didn't know where it was located. (I did see Yazoo City and Rolling Fork, however.) I was planning on attempting a trip last year, but the Trayvon Martin mess made me think it was best to let things settle down first.

Well . . . I'm thinking once again about going in the very near future, only now we've got the Ferguson issue. Furthermore, I am aware that one white man was beaten into a coma in rural Northern Mississippi a while back and now read that white employees and customers have been attacked at a Kroger's in Memphis.

I am asking all Mississippi FReepers (especially any who might live in or near the Delta) if a trip to visit the Dockery Plantation would be a dangerous undertaking at this time. Please note that I am not going to or through any large cities but am wanting to take a trip through the rural Delta. The only two "sure things" on the itinerary are Tutwiler and Dockery.

::Sigh:: It's such a shame what has become of us and what I've come to feel toward the dominant Black American community.

“And any gas station selling fried chicken is bound to be damn sure worth buying..”

I’ve found this to be true statewide. YMMV.

What you said. Some of the best fried chicken I've *ever* had came from the Chicken Man at a gas station in Key West.

Go figure ...

“Would it be dangerous to pull into a convenience store for dinner?”

In Memphis or Jackson, MS, it all depends on the part of town and the time of day. I am in Memphis every day and I carry a gun on me even in the best parts of town. I do the same when I am in Jackson, MS.

In the more rural areas of MS I am often more prone to leaving my gun in the console of my car because I have never had a single problem. Unless ethnic hostility ramps up (and it well may) I wouldn’t be too concerned about my safety anywhere in the Delta. I would still try to use common sense. For instance, I would not stop any place with a group of black teens hanging around and I would be extra-selective after dark.

You eat dinner at convenience stores?

There is one near here that has 2 hot dogs for $1.49!

The clerk is not named Apu either

I live in a town of 5800. While not a large city, 21,000 seems big to me.

When I'm a long way from home I do. Where else can you get such delicious fried chicken at prices that beat the blazes out of KFC? (And it generally tastes better, too!)

Is there another kind of food???

If it’s true that “you are what you eat” then my body must be made entirely out of fried chicken, peanut butter, and candy.

Dinner at a convenience store?

Should you ever find yourself in New Mexico, be sure to try the breakfast burritos sold in Shell stations ... good stuff.

I live in Indianola which is about 15 miles south of the Dockery Plantation. As previously noted this is rural with a very different demeanor than the Urban. As long as you use good judgement esp at night you should be quite safe. Another consideration: In this area we exercise our 2nd Amendment right to carry. The odds are if you mess with someone here you’re messing with an armed citizen. An armed
society is a polite society.

Part of it, yes. The other parts are in Mississippi and Arkansas.

And the southern most portion of Missouri's "boot heel", consisting of 6 counties, adjoining Arkansas, part of the Mississippi River's alluvial plain. Until the early 1900s, a swamp. Once drained it became some of the most fertile farm land in the country.

Those 6 counties produce 30% of all Missouri's agriculture products.

Outside of Memphis and Jackson you are as safe as any place in the country. Take your time and enjoy the culture; folks there, black or white, are friendly and helpful.

Thanks, flying Elvis, and all of you, for the advice and information.

I've actually been to the Delta several times in the past. I first went 26 years ago this month (it was still Old Highway 61 back then). On a later trip I actually drove into the flooding Sunflower River at night during a thunderstorm and had to be pulled from my car by a Clarksdale policeman. Good times!

This is the first time I have ever felt it necessary to ask if it was safe. We all know that Obama and the handlers around him are determined to bring about a race war where the Black "thesis" will defeat the white "antithesis" and bring about "socialism." I'm absolutely terrified that there are plans to assassinate Obama which will bring martial law and the criminalization of all opposition to the government. G-d forbid!

Man, y’all must have really bad fried chicken where you’re from. I live in MS and I don’t like most of the fried chicken in convenience stores.

I’m from MS btw. I can name 2 convenience stores right off the bat that have excellent chicken and chicken strips.

There are some really great places in central MS. But usually they’re the family run quickie mart type places way in the country.

I've just now found Lorman on a map and it's way further south than I'm going. ::Sigh:: Looks like I'm going to miss that particular fried chicken.
