Archaeologists find 5,600-year-old tomb in Egypt (Update)

Egypt said Wednesday archaeologists have unearthed a 5,600-year-old preserved tomb and mummy predating the pharaonic First Dynasty, a discovery that will shed new light on the pre-dynastic era.

The tomb was built before the rule of king Narmer, the founder of the First Dynasty who unified Upper and Lower Egypt in the 31th century BC, the antiquities ministry said in a statement.

The tomb was discovered in the Kom al-Ahmar region, between Luxor and Aswan, on the site of ancient Hierakonpolis, the city of the falcon, which was the capital of the Kingdom of Upper Egypt.

The archaeologists found an ivory statue of a bearded man and the mummy of the tomb's owner, who appeared to have died in his late teenage years, the ministry said.

They also found 10 ivory combs as well as tools, blades and arrow heads, it said.

The tomb's preserved state will provide new information on pre-dynastic rituals, said Renee Friedman, the head of the multinational archeological team.

The tombs of king Narmer and king Ka, a pre-dynastic pharaoh who paved the way to Egypt's unification, were previously discovered in Hierakonpolis.

If earth is only 6000 years old, then those people from 5600 years are the beginning of human history.

Humans are a whole lot older than even the ancient Egyptians.

Where are the ‘records’ of 10,000 or 20,000 years ago?........................

“If earth is only 6000 years old, then those people from 5600 years are the beginning of human history.”

That’s a complete mis-read of the Bible, done by people who multiplied generations in the old testament without the benefit of the Jewish teachings.

Yes, if you do that you get the year 5774 for right now (which is the Hebrew year of now) , but you go and read the Talmud and it says “we skipped over a lot of people and just named the important ones” and “times prior to the First Temple” are not to be calculated with this.

“Lucy” the hominid from Olduvai gorge in Africa is 1 million years old based on bones found.

Interesting comment about the Talmud. I have not heard that before and would like to read more on the subject. Do you have any URLs or search topics you can recommend?

The records are buried under more than two miles of water.

See here: http://www.threeimpacts-twoevents.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/COMET-IMPACT-ANALYSIS-AND-EFFECTS-20Aug2013.pdf

Geologists have made some terrible assumptions based on previously incomplete information.

I believe that the Red mountains in and around Birmingham, AL are the remnants of a crater wall from an ancient impact, as are the Appalachians and the connecting mountain and hill areas...........

I don’t have time today to look it up, but yes, there are arguably “missing years” in the Masoric calendar, and a number of opinions in this regard, one of which the Third Ruffian explained.

It is a leading opinion.

Others feel the date is correct, give or take somewhere between 100 and 10,000 years, not millions. (I fall into this camp, in that G-d specifically created Adam at age 34, so he could create a world that is already millions of years old, too.)

Some of this stems from the fact there are “good” records from First Temple forward (with a noted lack of clarity during the Babylonian period) and then wonderful records from Second Temple period from there.

(There is also the matter of “drift” of the calendar itself, in that there were (and are) competing methods of calculating the dates, especially with Karaites. But these are drifts of days within a given year, so not significant in the scale were are talking about.)

As a general consensus, however, it’s trivia and not really important in Judaism.

Someone is right and someone is wrong.

I have enough problems trying to serve G-d and my people, none of which is affected by how old the world is.
